About the Wine

Birthed as a project between Baron Philippe de Rothschild SA (owners of Mouton Rothschild in Bordeaux) and Viña Concha y Toro S.A. in 1997 with a view to creating an exceptional Franco-Chilean wine called Almaviva.

The name comes from Count Almaviva who is the hero of The Marriage of Figaro, the famous play by Beaumarchais (1732-1799), later turned into an opera by the genius of Mozart. The label, meanwhile, pays homage to Chile’s ancestral history, with three reproductions of a stylized design, which symbolizes the vision of the earth and the cosmos in the Mapuche civilization. The design appears on the "kultrun", a ritual drum used by the Mapuche.

The label bears the name Almaviva in Beaumarchais’ own handwriting. Two great traditions thus join hands to offer the whole world a promise of pleasure and excellence.

Almaviva was the first wine in Chile created under this French Château concept, taking into account exceptional terroir, one unique bodega, and one technical team – the three of which are dedicated exclusively to the production of one wine of unparalleled quality and excellence. Its excellence persists as one of the great wines of Chile.

This is a wine that epitomizes greatness with its intensity, structure, and balance. It underlines the movement away from overdone, jammy wines to a neoclassicism with energy and finesse. It also highlights how South America, specifically Chile, has come into its own as a wine area, producing superb wines that can compete with the best in the world.

Aging: 16 months in new French oak barrels.

Critical Reviews

What fabulous, perfumed aromas of lavender, blackcurrants, graphite, tapenade and hints of sweet tobacco. So complex and sophisticated. Medium- to full-bodied with tannins that have an incredible finesse and length. It goes on for minutes. It’s all about elegance and class. There’s harmony and freshness for a dry year. Seductive and so long. 72% cabernet sauvignon, 23% carmenere, 4% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot. Drinkable now, but one for the cellar. ~99 James Suckling

~96 Tim Atkin, Master of Wine

The 2022 Almaviva leads with a brooding, woody nose with savory, roasted pepper aromas and pleasing top notes of lavender and dried herbs. The palate is dense, luscious and staining, with considerable concentration and opulence. The finish continues this lush, layered opulence, concluding with supple, firm, unyielding tannins, welcomely braced with fresh acidity and herbal, methol-tinged flourishes. Despite its immediate richness, this is quite wound up, and it will take a few years to integrate its formidable tannins further. But it should be a joy to watch develop over the coming decade and beyond. It's a blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Carménère, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot aged for 20 months in 70% new French oak. ~96 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

A red blend composed of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Carménère, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot, aged for 20 months in French oak barrels, 70% of which are new. Initially a little shy, it reveals ripe red and black fruits enveloped by floral notes, dried herbs, and sweet spices, with its refreshing acidity and tense, fine-grained tannins dictating the rules and conferring fluidity and balance to the wine. Unctuous and pleasant, it has a polished, full, and persistent finish, with earthy touches, plums, cocoa, licorice, graphite, mocha, incense, and hints of oak aging. It is still young and has everything to become even better in the next 10 years. Alcohol 15%. ~95 Revista Adega

A dense, rich, and powerful nose, elegant and aromatically somewhat reserved, with notes of cedar oak and pencil shavings. On the palate, a sweet note of blackcurrant is perceived, with a very structured and dense mid-palate—chewy, round, ripe, and flavorful, with hints of vanilla, cedar, blackcurrant, and tobacco. The tannins are firm and layered, with a spicy sweetness. Rich and dense, with a layered, fruit-cake finish. Restrained and powerful. ~95 Alistair Cooper MW by Catad'Or Wine Guide
