About the Wine
"The balance of an Évangile lies in the complex interplay between the powerful aromatic intensity of our clay soil and the delicacy of our gravel soil, inviting us into the elegant world of Pomerol." ~Juliette Couderc, Director
Chateau L’Evangile is located next door to Chateau La Conseillante, not far from Petrus ($3500+) and only a stones throw from Chateau Cheval Blanc ($750+) in the south east section of the Pomerol plateau. In fact, only a small, dirt road separates L’Evangile from Saint Emilion. The soils are unique due to strip a blue marl clay on which all of the best estates in the Right Bank sit.
In the middle of the 18th century the Léglise family from Libourne were actively involved in developing the Pomerol vineyard. At the beginning of the 19th century, the lawyer Isambert acquired and renamed the estate. In 1862, L’Évangile was purchased by Paul Chaperon, whose descendants, the Ducasse family, remained the property’s owners until 1990. Paul Chaperon made the estate renowned, and constructed the L’Évangile building in the Second Empire style.
Since 1990 the property has belonged to Domaines Barons de Rothschild, owners of Lafite Rothschild. DBR’s initial influence was felt through more stringent selections for the fine wines, and the creation of Blason de L’Évangile as second wine.
L'Evangile only makes two wines and Blason is the second label which comes from younger vines. The winemaking team is the same. The soils are similar. But, this wine doesn't cost $300+. The resulting Blason wine is lighter in style, more approachable in its youth, and more fruit forward.
2022 was an extraordinary vintage for Bordeaux, it was blessed with a 97 pt review by Wine Spectator who said: "A beautiful vintage. Merlot berries were small and concentrated; Cabernet Franc also relished the conditions. Wines are very aromatic and sleek, with Pomerol and St.-Emilion excelling"
Tasting Notes
The color is deep with garnet reflections. The Blason is charming and lively, opening onto a juicy palate full of indulgence.
It has all the qualities of a Pomerol, seducing with the ripeness of its fruit and the finesse of its tannins, complemented by an elegant spicy framework. A certain vivacity in the mouth emphasizes a fresh fruit, a subtle mix between blackberry and raspberry. The mouth ends with elegant and silky tannins.
Critical Reviews
I like the berry and chocolate aromas, together with notes of fresh herbs and black olives. Medium-bodied with lovely fruit and a fresh and clean finish. Nice fluidity. Clean and bright. Made with less wood and some casks and amphora. From a selection of young vines. 81% merlot and 19% cabernet franc. So good to drink now, but will age nicely. ~93 James Suckling
The 2022 Blason De L'Evangile is rock-solid, with a charming, forward, undeniably delicious style. Red and black fruits, truffly earth, spice, and savory flowers all define the aromatics, and it’s medium to full-bodied, has a pure, silky mouthfeel, and no hard edges. Drink bottles any time over the coming 10-12 years. ~92 Jeb Dunnuck
