About the Wine
Château Haut-Bailly is a classified Grand Cru Classé de Graves located in the Pessac Léognan appellation, this Château it’s also known for producing one of the world’s most elegant wines.
Haut-Bailly dates back to 1461, where ancient archives prove that from as early as this year, these lands were already recognized as excellent for the cultivation of vines. However, it was until 1530 that the Château started to gain its well-deserved recognition. This was thanks to the Goyanèche and Daitze families, which were responsible of unify the best vineyard plots to produce the very first premium wine.
Today, this spectacular Château is the property of American M&T Bank’s CEO, Robert G. Wilmers. Robert describes this Château to be more than a financial investment, but a true passion. He and his team are completely committed to the continuous improvement of the Château. “In life and in wine, it is remarkable how far the application of good sense and science applied by good people can take you,” Robert says.
Gabriel Vialard has been Haut-Bailly’s winemaker for more than 20 years. He is a respected winemaker with a long trajectory in Bordeaux and has experience in different Châteaux like Smith Haut Lafitte and Chateau Cambon La Pelouse. Gabriel drives progressive change through experimentation while perpetuating the traditional values of the estate.
Chateau Haut-Bailly II Pessac-Leognan is an outstanding second wine from this Château. This wine has been highly praised by some of the most important wine critics in the world. Vinous Media called it “a bomb” and Wine Enthusiast said that it “is a good reflection of the top wine.”
The character of this wine is a series of unlikely paradoxes. It is as complex as it is balanced: deliberate and discrete, powerful and gentle, immediate and timeless.
2022 was an extraordinary vintage for Bordeaux, it was blessed with a 95 pt review by Wine Spectator who said: "A new paradigm for Bordeaux. Very aromatic and sleek, fresh and pure in feel, with all major varietals performing well; far more consistent than the 2018-2020 trio."
Tasting Notes
65% merlot, 30% cabernet sauvignon, 3% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot.
Critical Reviews
Aromas of berries, dark chocolate and walnuts on both the nose and palate. Medium- to full-bodied, dense and spicy. The tannins frame this nicely, with an intensity that makes it slightly chewy. 65% merlot, 30% cabernet sauvignon, 3% cabernet franc and the 2% petit verdot. Second wine of Haut-Bailly. Give this some time. Drink after 2027. ~94 James Suckling
Deep ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, brightening on the rim. Fine black forest berryish fruit, hints of cherries, some nougat, hints of cloves, a touch of orange zest. Substantial, ripe plums, dark cherries, fine acidity, ripe and chocolatey. Remains well lasting, a complex food wine with good ageing potential. ~94 Falstaff
Beautiful fragrance on the nose, so floral and aromatic. Clean and crystalline on the palate, smooth and supple but so clean and pure. Quite light, you can tell they didn’t push this, it feels calm and gentle with creamy blueberry fruit and soft black cherries. Lovely approachability and ease of drinking. Quietly seductive, has the power and concentration of the vintage but keeps a sleek and straight frame with bite and crunch. 2% Petit Verdot completes the blend. 3.8pH. As of this vintage, the 6ha Château le Pape production will go into this wine and Haut-Bailly's third wine. Consultants Christophe Olivier and Axel Marchal. ~92 Decanter
The 2022 Haut-Bailly II, a blend of 65% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, reveals a gourmand, elegant bouquet of roses, dark berries and flowers. Medium-bodied, round and supple, it's juicy yet has an assertive tannic frame, concluding with a fresh, ethereal finish. It's very classic. ~91 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Based on 65% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot, the 2022 Haut-Bailly II is medium ruby-hued with a ripe, opulent style in its mulled red and black cherries, licorice, dried flowers, and roasted herb-like aromatics. These carry to a medium to full-bodied, round, seamless second wine ~91 Jeb Dunnuck
