About the Wine
Nestled in the heart of the renowned Saint-Julien appellation, Château Lagrange stands proudly as a Third Classified Growth in the Bordeaux 1855 classification.
For nearly two centuries, Lagrange remained within the same family, preserving its unity. One of its most charismatic figures, Charles de Branne de Cours, guided the domain from 1712 to 1746, alongside his Bordeaux relatives who also managed Mouton. Together, they transformed Lagrange into a gem of Médoc viticulture. In 1787, Thomas Jefferson bestowed upon Lagrange the esteemed rank of Third Classified Growth.
As time marched on, Lagrange changed hands, each contributing to its rich history. But it was Count Duchâtel who truly elevated Lagrange between 1842 and 1875. The Tuscan-style tower, designed by the Italian architect Visconti, added elegance and uniqueness to the Château.
Assisted by his faithful estate manager, Galos, Duchâtel introduced innovative techniques, such as using sulphur to combat powdery mildew and pioneering a groundbreaking soil drainage system in the vineyard. Lagrange became a hub of High Society, hosting grand receptions and gatherings of artists who drew inspiration from the enchanting landscapes.
A new era began when the family group, Suntory, acquired Lagrange. Under the leadership of Marcel Ducasse, a graduate of the Bordeaux Institute of Oenology, alongside Kenji Suzuta and Keiichi Shiina, a comprehensive revitalization project was launched. Over three decades of dedication, Lagrange regained its prestigious standing.
Today, under the guidance of Matthieu Bordes and his team, Lagrange's legacy continues. Eric Boissenot, the esteemed consultant oenologist, collaborates with the property's four oenologists to craft wines that epitomize the elegant Saint-Julien style. Each year, they meticulously select the blend that will grace your glass in the winter following the harvest.
2022 was an extraordinary vintage for Bordeaux, it was blessed with a 95 pt review by Wine Spectator who said: "A new paradigm for Bordeaux. Very aromatic and sleek, fresh and pure in feel, with all major varietals performing well; far more consistent than the 2018-2020 trio."

Critical Reviews
Continuing a run of exceptional vintages where everything seems to be going right at this property. High Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend, and it comes across in the sleek black fruits and peony character, very much floral and finessed. Good stuff, this is impressive, enjoyable, very St Julien and very good. 50% new oak for ageing, Eric Boissenot consultant, Mathieu Bordes director since 2013. ~96 Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux
Cassis, ripe black cherries, freshly sharpened pencils, leather, and violet notes all shine in the 2022 Château Lagrange, a remarkably pure, concentrated, powerful Saint-Julien with fine tannins and a seamless, balanced mouthfeel. It has the fruit to shine even today. As with many of these top Médocs, I wouldn't be surprised to see this close down with 2-3 years of bottle age. It's going to be long-lived. The blend is 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, and 2% Petit Verdot that spent 21 months in 60% new French oak. ~95+ Jeb Dunnuck
A polished and expressive St.-Julien that shows spot-on balance. Fresh blueberries, wet stones, currants and a touch of red berries. Medium- to full-bodied with fine, chalky tannins that are firm but dissolved. Quite precise, juicy and focused. Beautiful balance and length. Drink from 2027. ~95 James Suckling
The 2022 Lagrange (Saint-Julien) has a serious Saint-Julien bouquet: quite dense compared to previous vintages, with potent black fruit, cedar and freshly rolled tobacco that all dovetails into more estuarine-influenced aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with a ripe entry, quite bold in flavor yet there is also control and focus. This is a more muscular Lagrange, grippy with a tarry finish. To repeat, the 2022 is a 'serious' Lagrange in a positive use of that word, one that will demand bottle age, ranking alongside the 2016 as the best Grand Vin from this estate. ~95 Vinous Media
Absolutely dense and engaging in the main matrix shows notes of black plums, blackberries, dark chocolate, sage and laurel. Full body, perfectly extracted tannins and a muscular and decidedly solid and vibrant finish. Better from 2028. ~95 WinesCritic.com
Deep in color, the nose reminds you of walking into a flower shop carrying a basket of fresh-picked berries. The wine is silky, fresh, polished, elegant, and deep, with length, soft tannins, and waves of fruit and freshness in the finish. Starting with the 2016 vintage, Lagrange has been on a hot streak and with 2022, the streak continues! The wine is produced from 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot. Drink from 2027-2055. ~95 The Wine Cellar Insider
The 2022 Lagrange is a blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, and 2% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple in color, it rocks up with ready-to-go notes of warm black currants, baked plums, and pencil shavings, plus hints of wild sage and iron ore. The medium-bodied palate is bright and energetic with muscular black fruit and savory accents, framed by grainy tannins, finishing long and lifted. ~95 The Wine Palet
The 2022 Lagrange has turned out nicely in bottle, offering up classic aromas of crème de cassis, plums and pencil shavings, framed by a deft touch of oak vanillin. Medium to full-bodied, dense and velvety, with lively acids and chalky tannins, it's an especially muscular, rich Lagrange that will reward a bit of patience. ~94+ Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Expressive nose, floral and fragrant with notes of crushed juniper berry, prunes, pencil lead, cigar box and mint. Energetic, with a mouthwatering freshness and delicate tannins. ~94 Decanter
