About the Wine
Here's the deal: Meyney sits right next to Château Montrose (2nd growth) and Calon-Ségur (3rd growth), both commanding $120+ per bottle. Same neighborhood, same terroir, totally different price tag.
This stunning Château perches high above the Gironde estuary, ruling over 126 acres of pure vineyard gold. The estate's been around since the 17th century when monks first planted vines here. Everything changed in 2004 when new owners brought in Hubert de Bouard - the mastermind behind Château Angelus - to work his magic. Result? Meyney is now making the best wine of its 400-year history.
The location is absolutely dialed in. The estuary blocks those killer frosts while 35-40 year old vines climb a steep 20-meter slope, draining perfectly through coveted Garonne gravels.
The vines climb to an altitude of 20 meters up, quite a steep slope, ensuring good natural drainage of the soil. Similar to “Pétrus”, a layer of blue clay about 10 feet thick lies at a depth of 8 feet below the surface. These remarkable natural factors give the wine an exceptional richness.
Bottom line: This is premium Saint-Estèphe terroir at insider prices, before everyone figures it out.
This wine is a Cru Bourgeois. A Bordeaux designation that highlights wines from exceptional estates in the Médoc, just shy of the elite Grand Cru Classé status. These wines offer outstanding quality and terroir expression, providing a taste of Bordeaux's finest at a more accessible price. It's the hidden gem for savvy wine lovers who appreciate richness, structure, and depth—without the price tag of the big names.
Tasting Notes
The 2022 Château Meyney Saint-Estèphe is a powerful wine with a dark, imposing character, blending 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, and 13% Petit Verdot. It offers intense aromas of blackberry, currant, and red cherry, complemented by floral notes of violet and rose petals. Additional layers include cedar, licorice, leather, and hints of oriental spices, while a subtle mineral touch adds depth and complexity. Its impressive structure and bold fruit make this a standout wine with excellent aging potential.
Critical Reviews
This always represents good value. Spicy, stony and floral at the same time with deep blue fruit and hints of pine, incense and cloves. Veins of tannins show a mineral verve. This is firm, powerful and long. A bit too young at this stage but already showing potential. A very good vintage. Drink after 2028. ~95 James Suckling
Mature and satisfying, it shows a solid profile with a fat and voluminous nature. Notes of black cherries, red plums and black plums describe the main scene. Lots of black tea leaves the secondary one. Full body, perfectly ripe tannins and a balanced and essential finish. Better from 2027. ~95 WinesCritic.com
While I wasn't able to taste the 2022 Château Meyney En Primeur, it's a beauty now from bottle. Needing air to show at its best, this deep purple-hued Saint-Estèphe has a ripe, powerful nose of darker currants, chocolate, smoked tobacco, and cedar pencils. This carries to a full-bodied Meyney that has a broad, layered mouthfeel, ripe, velvety tannins, beautiful overall balance, and a great finish. It's accessible even today with a decant, but it's going to take a decade to hit maturity and will age gracefully on its concentration and depth. ~94+ Jeb Dunnuck
Dense blackberry fruits go along with the rich tannins. The spicy wood flavors are a layer under the fine fruits. It has a future of ripe tannins and black fruits. ~94 Wine Enthusiast
Deep ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, brightening on the rim. Black forest berries, blackberries and liquorice, tobacco spice, some nougat. Full-bodied, round and complex, dark nougat, supporting tannins, good length, chocolatey mineral finish. ~93 Falstaff
Well balanced ripe red fruits, creamy without being overly exuberant, tomato leaf and rosebud interwoven with damson and red cherry fruits, good stuff, one to share. ~93 Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux
The 2022 Meyney has turned out very well, offering up aromas of crème de cassis, bay leaf and pencil shavings, followed by a medium to full-bodied, supple and fleshy palate that's rich and seamless, exhibiting an integration of tannin that can't always be taken for granted at this address. In fact, this appears to be the best Meyney produced for quite some time, and it's well worth seeking out. ~93 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2022 Meyney has an intense, finely delineated bouquet with blackberry, bilberry, loam and light briny scents that unfold with confidence. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and vibrant, with firm tannins. It is not dissimilar to the Lilian Ladouys in style, though there is a touch more finesse and pepperiness on the finish. It has good potential, but needs time. ~92 Vinous Media
