About the Wine

Clos du Cellier aux Moines was originally built by Cistercian monks in the 11th century — yes, monks were farming this land before Columbus discovered America — and today it's owned by Philippe Pascal, the former CEO of LVMH, the most powerful luxury brand group in the world. He didn't buy it to flip it. He bought it because he believed in what this land could produce, then poured everything into it: a full estate renovation, and a commitment to biodynamic farming that made Cellier the first certified organic and biodynamic estate in Givry.

To run the winemaking, Pascal brought in Guillaume Marko — a winemaker whose resume includes Domaine de la Romanée Conti ($3,000 to over $20,000+), one of the most famous wine estate on earth, and Arnoux-Lachaux, one of the most exciting producers in Burgundy today.

"Les Dessus" simply means "the upper part" — the top of the clos, where the vines sit highest on the slope and the soils are packed with limestone. That's what gives this wine its freshness and that distinctive mineral bite that separates great Burgundy from everything else.

The 2022 harvest was exceptional — warm, dry, and clean, with no shortcuts taken in the cellar. The result is a wine that's ripe and expressive right now but built to age gracefully. James Suckling gave it 97 points. Enough said.

Tasting Notes

100% Pinot Noir. An extraordinarily beautiful nose of fresh red fruit, subtle spice, and rooty earth. Stunning harmony and silkiness on the medium- to full-bodied palate, with a biscuity richness giving way to restrained chalky power in the finish. Drink now or hold. Pairs beautifully with roast lamb, duck breast, mushroom risotto, and soft-ripened cheeses.

Critical Reviews

This has an extremely beautiful nose even though the wine is still very youthful. Stunning red fruit aromas with a wealth of subtle spicy and rooty notes. Stunning harmony and silkiness on the medium- to full-bodied palate. I love the combination of biscuity texture and the restrained chalky power in the finish that gives this Côte Chalonnaise masterpiece its unique personality. The backbone of this barrel selection is from vines planted in 2008. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold. ~97 James Suckling
