About the Wine
Kanzler Vineyards is no ordinary winery. Nestled in the Sebastopol Hills of Sonoma, this family-owned vineyard started from humble beginnings in 1996, when the Kanzlers decided to transform a run-down apple orchard into a world-class Pinot Noir vineyard.
At Kanzler Vineyards, every bottle tells a story—a story of passion, hard work, and a family’s unwavering belief in the land they call home. In 1994, Steve Kanzler and his family moved to Sonoma, drawn by the promise of a rural life. What they found was a neglected apple orchard on the land, but Steve had bigger plans. With no farming experience, but an insatiable curiosity and a love for fine wine, he began to study viticulture.
In 1996, they planted their first vines in the Sebastopol Hills, one of the most unique and cool-climate spots in Sonoma. Many thought the area was too cold and windy for vineyards, but Steve and his family were determined. Their neighbor, Perry Kozlowski of Kozlowski Farms, encouraged them, famously saying, “You can grow premium wine grapes in about three places in the world. You’re living in one of them.” That advice sparked a family legacy in winemaking.
Fun Fact: Perry Kozlowski is a key figure in Sonoma County’s agricultural history, particularly known for his family’s longstanding involvement in farming. He is part of Kozlowski Farms, a family-run business that has been growing apples and berries in the region since 1949.
It didn’t take long for the world to take notice. By 2002, their grapes were being used by prestigious wineries like Kosta Browne, Landmark, Flowers, and Gary Farrell. Kosta Browne even began making a Kanzler Vineyard-designated Pinot Noir, which went on to earn stellar ratings, including a 98-point score from Wine Spectator. Since then, Kanzler Vineyards has been recognized for producing some of the finest Pinot Noir in Sonoma County.
Steve’s son, Alex Kanzler, took the reins as the winery’s head winemaker in 2011, after gaining experience at some of Sonoma's best wineries, including Landmark Vineyards. Under Alex's leadership, the vineyard’s wines have only gotten better, with accolades pouring in from critics and wine lovers alike.
From planting their first vines to today, the Kanzler family’s commitment to quality, sustainability, and craftsmanship has never wavered. This Pinot Noir is a perfect example of their dedication and the incredible fruit that comes from one of Sonoma's best vineyards.
Tasting Notes
100% Pinot Noir. Expressive nose of orange peel, pomegranate, and a hint of gravelly earth, capturing the unique character of the Sebastopol Hills. On the palate, tart red fruits, like cranberry and cherry, mingle with delicate hibiscus notes, while the natural acidity gives it a refreshing lift. The wine's fine structure and smooth, lengthy finish make it a standout, showing off its pure fruit expression and hinting at its potential to evolve beautifully over the next several years.
Critical Reviews
Very elegant and perfumed, with aromas of dark cherries, graphite, potpourri and spices. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and bright acidity, giving flavors of blackberries, blueberry bush, plums and dried herbs. Well balanced with nice poise. Drink or hold. ~93 James Suckling
Aromas of toasty barrel spice and cherry lollipop waft from the nose of this medium bodied wine. The palate is saturated with flavors of raspberry candy, menthol, caramel and black tea. Pair this with miso glazed salmon. Best from 2026-2035. ~91 Wine Enthusiast
