About the Wine
This is the second vintage of this new label coming from the cellars of Ducru Beaucaillou. Given that the winemaking team of the second growth grand cru classified wine sells for over $250/btl, this new Haut Medoc wine from the same meticulous team offers amazing value.
The new wine comes from vineyards located in the Haut-Médoc; plots brought by Madame Eugène-Borie on her marriage and more recently by the acquisition of plots from Madame Fort-Pradère. The wine was created as a homage to the woman who chaired the Supervisory Board from 1998 to today, but also to an attentive and loving mother. Under the Haut Medoc appellation, this wine offers Borie quality at an entry-level price.
Vinified in the cellars by the Ducru-Beaucaillou team, this wine receives the best care: the technical winemaking process, very selective blending, and careful aging for 12 months in barrel (including 20% new oak). Technique at the service of purity of expression. Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon rub shoulders without ever competing; one brings opulence, the other brings structure. In blends, as in marriage, it is complementarity, the mutual exaltation that counts. Madame de Beaucaillou is an invitation but also an introduction to the Borie signature, to the philosophy of the house.
2022 was an extraordinary vintage for Bordeaux, it was blessed with a 95 pt review by Wine Spectator who said: "A new paradigm for Bordeaux. Very aromatic and sleek, fresh and pure in feel, with all major varietals performing well; far more consistent than the 2018-2020 trio."
Tasting Notes
66% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Petit Verdot. Deep, dark garnet with a seductive, very fruity with a beautifully aromatic nose. This is a very indulgent wine. Well balanced with a nice finish.
Critical Reviews
Intense and deeply colored, with lots of violets, fresh blue fruit, blackberries and minerals. Really flavorful, with precise tannins and lovely firmness without chewiness. Long and concentrated but fresh and energetic. 66% merlot, 23% cabernet sauvignon and 11% petit verdot. Drink from 2028. ~93 James Suckling
A blend of a number of Haut-Médoc estates owned by the Borie family, the wine is spicy, ripe with firm tannins wrapped inside a comfortable richness. At this stage, the wood is showing of course, but so is the ripe black fruit. ~93 Wine Enthusiast
Dark black fruits and flowers shine in the perfume. The palate shows off its sweet, black cherries, blackberries, and chocolate with just a swirl. Drink this on release, or age it for more complexity. If I owned it, I would be popping a cork on release. The wine blends 66% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Petit Verdot. 14.5% ABV. Drink from 2025-2037. ~92 The Wine Cellar Insider
Deep dark ruby garnet colour with opaque core and purple reflections, delicate brightening on the rim. Black cherries, subtle notes of blackberries, delicate floral nuances, a touch of orange zest. Juicy, elegant, ripe plums, vivid tannins, mineral and salty finish, chocolatey aftertaste. ~92 Falstaff
This is a blend of 23% Cabernet Sauvignon, 66% Merlot, and 11% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple in color, it storms out of the glass with notes of baked plums, blackberry pie, and Indian spices with hints of sautéed herbs and espresso. The full-bodied palate is rich and chewy with loads of savory nuances and a peppery kick to the finish. ~91 The Wine Palate
The 2022 Madame De Beaucaillou (66% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 11% Petit Verdot) is brilliant, with a dense ruby/plum hue as well as powerful aromatics of crème de cassis, ripe black cherries, spicy wood, and smoky tobacco. This rich, medium to full-bodied, layered, concentrated beauty way over-delivers. ~91 Jeb Dunnuck
From the winemaking team at Château Ducru Beaucaillou, this wine’s full title is Madame de Beaucaillou, Hommage à Madame Eugène Borie (owner Bruno Borie’s mother), and is drawn from 55ha across the appellation, 35ha of Listrac, 11ha of Cussac Fort Medoc and the rest Moulis, all declassified into Haut-Médoc. It’s a success in 2022, and you’ll see some of the glamour of the mother ship Ducru although expect the full concentration of the year. Plenty of Left Bank signature here, black fruits riven through the spice notes. 29hl/h yields. ~90 Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux
