About the Wine
Founded in 1988, Patz & Hall has become one of California’s premier producers of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, with a sharp focus on single-vineyard expressions from top-tier sites across the Sonoma Coast, Carneros, and Russian River Valley.
The winery was established by four partners: Donald Patz, James Hall, Anne Moses, and Heather Patz, each bringing their own expertise to the brand. Over time, Patz & Hall earned a reputation for elegant, expressive wines that showcase the nuance of California’s cool-climate vineyards.
Now owned by Ste. Michelle Wine Estates, Patz & Hall continues its legacy under the guidance of founding winemaker James Hall, who remains deeply involved in the winemaking process.
The winery is especially known for its close grower partnerships with some of California’s most iconic vineyards, such as Gap’s Crown, Dutton Ranch, and Hudson Vineyard. Patz & Hall wines have earned widespread critical acclaim, including multiple 90+ scores from Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast, and have been featured in Wine Spectator’s Top 100 Wines list—a testament to their consistent quality and craftsmanship.
The 2022 offering is a collection of twenty-three single-vineyard quality sites that could all be bottled as single source bottlings: six blocks of Dutton Ranch, various blocks of Sanchietti Vineyard, Gap’s Crown Vineyard, Zio Tony Ranch, Parmelee-Hill Vineyard, Alder Springs and Durell Vineyard.
The 2022 vintage in Sonoma was remarkable, marked by a series of climatic challenges and triumphs. A sustained heatwave in August accelerated ripeness, leading to a compressed harvest. The 2022 wines are shaping up to be exceptional, with delightful fruit profiles, acid structures, and concentration. It’s a vintage that captures the essence of Sonoma’s terroir, promising wines that are vibrant, complex, and true to their vineyard origins.
Tasting Notes
100% Chardonnay.
Fresh fruit abounds in this bottling, with aromas of Granny Smith apple, orange spritz, and Bosque pear caressing the senses. Succulent acidity, along with a wet rock minerality, bestows elegance on the palate and makes this a wine to refresh the spirit on a warm summer day.
Critical Reviews
Ripe, succulent peach, apricot, and mango flavors are generous and juicy, with notes of toasted coconut, crème anglaise, tangerine, and orange blossoms, plus a drizzle of wildflower honey. The intensity persists on the finish, with hints of shortbread and grilled pineapple that linger. Drink now. 18,000 cases made. ~ 93 Wine Spectator
Aromas of golden apples, pears, butterscotch, hazelnuts and lemon cream. On the palate, flavors of candied citrus, caramel, and green apples. A stylized yet polished wine. Medium-bodied. ~ 92 James Suckling
A bright straw/yellow color, the 2022 Chardonnay Sonoma Coast is a ripe and aromatic offering with aromas of lemon curd, honeysuckle, wet stones, and melon rind. It offers medium to full-bodied richness, with a rounded and delicately creamy texture, a nice, even lift of fresh acidity, and a subtle flourish of saline. It’s a charming and well-detailed wine from this warm vintage that will likely show its best. ~ 90 Jeb Dunnuck
