Robert Mondavi — does he really need an introduction?

In 1966, Robert Mondavi established his eponymous winery with a visionary goal: to create Napa Valley wines that could rival the world’s finest. To fulfill this vision, he chose the iconic To Kalon Vineyard in Oakville, California, renowned for producing exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc grapes.

With decades of experience—including her pivotal role in crafting the inaugural vintage of Opus One—Geneviève continues to uphold Mondavi’s founding philosophy: that wine is not just a product of the land, but a reflection of passion, culture, and time.

Today, that philosophy comes vividly to life in the 2022 The Reserve To Kalon  Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine captures the essence of Mondavi’s timeless style: power balanced by elegance, structure softened by finesse.

The fruit for this wine came exclusively from our To Kalon Vineyard, which is located on prime benchland in the Oakville appellation. The well-drained, low-fertility soils and optimal sun exposu,re here enable the development of rich, complex flavors and varietal character. The wine is 94% Cabernet Sauvignon chosen from five of our favorite lots from this site.

The 2022 vintage was excellent and mild. After rains in January and February, the growing season remained dry. Temperatures were moderate and the weather optimal at bud break in April and bloom in May. Weather remained even through summer and harvest, resulting in a lower-than-average yield of small, deeply concentrated grapes. The final blend was aged for 20 months in French oak barrels (100% new)

Fruit for our Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon comes from our own vineyards in Oakville and Stags Leap, as well as from growers with whom we have long-term relationships. 

Aromas: Fresh black fruit with dark chocolate, dried herbs, and hints of vanilla and violet
Flavors: Black plum and blackberry with red fruit and a hint of graphite on the finish
Body: Elegant and plush with sweet, beautifully integrated tannins and a lengthy finish

Mondavi's 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon To Kalon Vineyard Reserve delivers waves of black cherries, loam and spice. Full-bodied, it's rich and concentrated, with a long, velvety finish that adds hints of dark chocolate. ~ 95 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 

This Bordeaux-style red blend is heavy on cabernet franc, lending a rather firm texture to wrap around rich red and black fruit flavors. Lively tannins and acidity give a little bite, backing the raspberry, black cherry and cedar flavors. Drink now or hold. ~ 94 James Suckling
