About the Wine

Paso Robles has been quietly producing some of California's most exciting Cabernet Sauvignon for years — bold, sun-kissed fruit with structure you don't always see at this price point. The 2022 Sculpterra Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the best examples of why.

Every grape in this bottle comes from the Frankel Family's own estate, specifically the "Puerta Electrica" block in the El Pomar District — one of Paso's most compelling sub-appellations, where the Templeton Gap funnels cool Pacific air into the valley each afternoon and keeps fruit from going overripe. The result is Cabernet with real concentration but genuine freshness.

Winemaker Paul Frankel aged the wine in 100% new oak, layering it with vanilla, cedar, and toasted spice while letting the fruit — dense blackberry, dark cherry, cassis — stay front and center.

Sculpterra isn't just a winery. It's one of Paso's most distinctive estate experiences, anchored by a multi-million-dollar sculpture garden that Dr. Warren Frankel built alongside his vineyards. The family has been farming this ground since 1979, and that kind of rootedness shows in the wines. If you enjoy Napa Cab but want more value and a little more rustic charm in the glass, this is exactly where to look.

Tasting Notes

100% Cabernet Sauvignon.

2022 Sculpterra Estate Cabernet Sauvignon opens with a dark, expressive nose of black cherry, raisin, plum, and currant, layered with herbal tea, bittersweet chocolate, and olive tapenade.

On the palate, concentrated dark fruit — blueberry, cassis, blackberry — is framed by firm, well-integrated tannins and a rich, full-bodied texture.

The 100% new oak aging contributes notes of pine, cedar, vanilla, coconut, and clove, while a lingering finish of truffle, mushroom, and dark chocolate adds depth and complexity. Structured and cellar-worthy, reaching its peak around 2028.

Critical Reviews

Candied strawberry and cherry aromas are layered in thyme and licorice on the nose of this bottling. A pleasant cherry sorbet washes across the palate, with vanilla and more licorice flavors adding warmth. ~ 90 Wine Enthusiast
