About the Wine

"The velvety allure of this wine is what truly captivates me. The carefully selected blend showcases the volcanic terroir, capturing the essence of native botanicals like California bay laurel and groundcover sage from the chaparral. These vibrant notes meld seamlessly with the earthy, floral, and bold fruit flavors, creating a wine that's as balanced as it is intriguing.” ~Joy Merrilees, VP of Winemaking & Production

Every year, Joy and the team carefully select just a few barrels to create these special releases. In this blend, Cabernet Franc adds a touch of earthy, floral finesse, while Petite Sirah brings bold color and a lingering terroir finish. Syrah adds juicy, ripe fruit flavors and mid-palate richness, and a splash of Cabernet Sauvignon ties it all together with a structured, smooth finish. The outcome? A wine that’s bursting with character and balance.

Shannon Winery is a place where tradition meets innovation, where the rugged spirit of the land intertwines with the artistry of winemaking. Founder Clay Shannon, a true maverick, embarked on a journey in 1996 that would redefine winemaking. His determination to cultivate exceptional fruit in harmony with nature led to the creation of the Shannon Family of Wines. With over 2,000 acres of breathtaking mountain property, where over 1,000 are planted with vines, the Shannon Family of Wines stands as a testament to commitment and creativity.

At Shannon Family of Wines, the commitment to the environment isn't just a phase; it's a lifestyle that’s impregnated into every aspect of the family’s operations. The accolades, including the California Green Medal Environment Award, stand as proof of their unwavering dedication. The winery is Sustainable Certified, and they’re on their way to becoming one of the largest Certified Organic mountain-grown vineyards in the U.S

2023 was an amazing year! Early spring rains soaked the vines, continuing into early summer with three times the usual rainfall. This cooler, late-ripening vintage allowed for longer hang times, resulting in the darkest reds and intense whites we've seen in years. Look out for vintage 2023 - it's going to be one for the books.

Tasting Notes

45% Cabernet Franc, 29% Petit Verdot, 22% Merlot, 4% Petite Sirah

Bright fruit, spice, texture, and all of the tannin are hallmarks of the high-elevation vineyards of Lake County. The dark fruits, old-world characters, and dried herbs come from the lower elevations of north Napa County.

What our customers say about us

Shannon Ridge

Lake County, California

Shannon Ridge Family of Wines is a large producer with extensive land holdings in the North Coast zone of California. There are a number of sub-brands within the portfolio. Cabernet Sauvignon (or blends), Pinot Noir, Zinfandel are the red grapes which feature most often. Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are the principal white wine grapes.

Clay Shannon set up Shannon Ranches vineyard management company in 1993. Three years later he established his first 80 acre (32ha) parcel on the Lake County property known as Home Ranch. This lies between 2100 and 2400 feet (640-730m) on volcanic soils. It benefits from cool winds off Clear Lake and the mountains to the north.

The business now farms around 1000 acres (250 hectares) of estate vineyards. Around 3000 acres of additional vineyards are farmed under management contracts. Of this, two thirds lie in the Sacramento Valley, with the remainder split between Lake County and Napa Valley.

In the early years of the business the fruit was sold off. Nowadays around half the fruit is used for estate wines, with the remainder purchased by wines in Napa and Sonoma counties.
