About the Wine

Located at the base of the majestic Mayacamas Mountains in the heart of Saint Helena, the Ehlers Estate vineyard is a place steeped in history. Grapes have been growing on this land since the 1800s. The story of Ehlers Estate began in 1886 when a beautiful stone winery was built, marking a lasting dedication to winemaking. Today, the talented winemaking team at Ehlers Estate continues this legacy, crafting small batches of world-class wines.

Owned by the Leducq Charitable Trust, established by the visionary Jean and Sylviane Leducq in 1996, Ehlers Estate embodies the American Dream rooted in a love for food, wine, and a touch of Bordeaux-inspired charm.

The vineyards, which are certified organic by the California Organic Farmers Organization (CCOF), yield grapes of unparalleled quality. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Sauvignon Blanc thrive under the nurturing care of Ehlers Estate's viticultural team.

Jean Leducq's journey from post-war Europe to the heights of American business success is a testament to his indomitable spirit. This adventure took Jean from the linen factories of Europe to the rolling vineyards of Napa Valley, where he pursued his dream of creating wines to rival the finest Bordeaux vintages.

Adam Henkel, who joined Ehlers Estate in 2022, is the current winemaker. His resume reads like a who’s who of the wine world. Trained under the legendary Philippe Melka, Adam gained invaluable experience working with some of Napa Valley’s most celebrated estates. His time with Staglin Family Vineyard and Lail Vineyards shaped his approach to crafting wines that honor the vineyard’s essence. At Ehlers, Adam’s commitment to sustainability and organic farming ensures every bottle reflects both the terroir and the meticulous care behind the winemaking process.

The 2023 Ehlers Estate Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon delivers lush, full-throttle Napa character. Estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc lead the charge, supported by powerfully structured Cabernet sourced from elite Howell Mountain and top Napa Valley sites. This is Ehlers’ signature style—bold, polished, and unmistakably Napa.

Aging: 53% new French Oak, 18 months.

ABV: 14.5%

Tasting Notes

83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Cabernet Franc.

A blast of deep purple fruit leads with concentrated blackberry, graphite, crushed rock, cedar, tobacco leaf, cassis, and spicy dried herbs.

The palate is bold and commanding—full-bodied with firm, sculpted tannins and electric acidity that amplifies layers of berry compote, warm spice, and mocha-laced oak. The finish goes on and on, leaving a trail of power, polish, and dark-fruited intensity.

Critical Reviews

The Ehlers 2023 Estate Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon opens with a plush richness and notes of black cherry, plum compote, wild berry bramble, warm spices, and dried herbs. On the palate, the wine is supple yet finely structured, with a velvety texture and juicy fruit, before unveiling deeper nuances of cedar, mocha, and baking spices, along with savory undertones. The tannins are polished but firm, providing a strong backbone that carries the wine through a long, harmonious finish. ~ 96 Anne Sewell Briggs, DipWSET

What our customers say about us

Ehlers Estate

Napa Valley, California

Ehlers Estate — a historic, sustainably-farmed Napa Valley boutique winery — traces its roots back to 1886, when immigrant founder Bernard Ehlers built the stone barn that still anchors the property.

Today the estate spans 42 organic acres just north of St. Helena, producing estate-grown Bordeaux-varietal wines that reflect the unique soils and microclimate of Napa’s narrow ‘pinch’ between the Mayacamas and Vaca Mountains.

Under the stewardship of the Leducq Foundation, the winery blends Old-World tradition with modern organic and biodynamic practices — creating elegant, terroir-driven wines while supporting global cardiovascular research.
