About the Wine
This isn’t your typical Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. This is OTU—born on the edge of the earth, just 2km from the raw Pacific coast, where vines battle wild winds, dry hills, and salty ocean air to deliver something thrillingly different. Think flinty, fierce, and full of energy.
Named after the ancient Otuwhero River, the OTU estate lies in the Awatere Valley, Marlborough’s wildest subregion—cooler, windier, and far more rugged than the well-trodden Wairau. That brutal beauty leads to low yields, tiny berries, and massive flavour. The result? A Sauvignon Blanc that’s electric with minerality, punched up by tomato leaf and tropical fruit, with a zip of citrus that cuts clean through.
But here’s the real reason OTU hits differently: Two winemakers. Both legends.
First, Anna Remond. Fifteen years shaping white wine for one of New Zealand’s top wineries. Trained in Sancerre and Burgundy. A mentor for the Women in Wine Programme. Anna knows this grape like the back of her hand—but lets the vineyard do the talking.
Then there’s Jeff Clarke—a bona fide icon. Named International White Winemaker of the Year twice, and chosen by critic Tim Atkin as one of the Top 6 Winemakers in the World. Jeff helped put Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc on the global map. Now, he brings his full force to OTU, helping shape a new coastal classic.
Together, they keep things hands-off in the cellar, letting the wild coastal terroir show off. And wow, does it.
This is Awatere Valley in a glass—intense, zesty, pure, and alive.
It’s Sauvignon Blanc with grit and grace. The kind of wine that makes you sit up straighter after one sip and say, “Wait, what is this?”
It’s the bottle you bring when you want to impress but also want to drink the whole thing yourself.
Tasting Notes
100% Sauvignon Blanc. The palate is concentrated with flavors of citrus, melon, gooseberry and passionfruit. Delicate blackcurrant and wild fennel flavors dance around the core of primary fruit. The finish is crisp and clean with hints of lingering spice and a touch of chalky minerality.
Critical Reviews
Intense and enticing, the bouquet shows passionfruit, fig, feijoa and lime zest aromas, followed by a powerfully flavoursome palate offering succulent fruit flavours with beautifully pitched acidity, finishing impressively long and satisfying. At its best: now to 2027. ~95 Points & 5 Stars Sam Kim, Wine Orbit
Ripe, tangy Sauvignon with passionfruit, lemongrass, oyster shell, and green capsicum flavours. Good weight and richly textured with a backbone of crisp, mouth-watering acidity. ~93 Points & 4 Stars Bob Campbell, Master of Wine, Real Review
A perfumed nose with gooseberries, green melon, currant leaves and stones. Crisp and crunchy with a medium body and bright, razor-sharp acidity. Sustainable. Drink now. Screw cap. ~90 James Suckling
