About the Wine

When Wine Spectator crowned Rochioli’s debut estate bottling the "Best Pinot Noir in America" in 1985, it didn’t just launch a label—it ignited a revolution that put the Russian River Valley on the global map. Four decades later, the Rochioli family remains the undisputed royalty of the region, still setting the gold standard that every other producer in the valley aims to reach.

The story began in 1911 when Joe Rocchioli Sr. arrived from Italy to farm this hallowed ground, but the true turning point came in 1968. That was the year Joe Jr. took a massive gamble on Pinot Noir long before the variety was a household name. For decades, these "super-grapes" were the secret weapon behind the world’s most cult-followed wines until Tom Rochioli finally brought the name to the front of the bottle. Today, Tom continues to craft liquid history alongside the fourth generation of the family, ensuring the legacy remains as vibrant as the vines themselves.

The 2023 Estate Pinot Noir is a masterclass in precision and a "symphony" of the property’s most iconic vineyard blocks. This year’s blend is anchored by the elegance of Little Hill (44%) and the lushness of Sweetwater (24%), while drawing deep historical soul from the 1968 heritage vines of West Block (14%), East Block (10%), and Big Hill (8%). Each block is fermented separately in small, open-top tanks to preserve its unique voice before being aged for 15 months in French oak.

The result is a wine of total class, offering a refined explosion of blood orange, wild strawberry, and crushed rose petals that leads into a silky, seamless finish of sandalwood and forest floor. With only 2,829 cases produced, this remains one of the most chased-after bottles in California. If you have spent your life drinking heavy Napa Cabs and want to experience the pinnacle of cool-climate power and elegance, this is more than just a wine—it is the ultimate destination for any serious collector.

Tasting Notes

100% Pinot Noir sourced from five estate vineyard blocks (44% Little Hill, 24% Sweetwater, 14% West Block, 10% East Block, 8% Big Hill). The nose bursts with cranberry, blackberry, blood orange, and juniper, layered with forest floor and rose petal. Medium to full-bodied on the palate with waves of spicy cherry fruit, dusty mineral, and savory herbs, all delivered in a silky texture. French oak aging (15 months, 30% new) adds a refined sandalwood and vanilla edge. Vibrant acidity energizes the long, nuanced finish.

Critical Reviews

A youthful bright red color, the 2023 Pinot Noir Russian River Valley is consistently one of my favorite appellation wines, and this one does not disappoint. The nose has refined spice, a floral rosy perfume, and notes of fresh red cherries, fresh mossy earth, and river rock. The palate is medium-bodied and has fantastic elegance and finesse, with pure fresh fruit and fine tannins, with just a lovely lift of spice on the finish. Drink 2025-2037. ~95 Jeb Dunnuck

The 2023 Pinot Noir Estate bursts from the glass with scents of cranberry, blackberry, juniper, Fernet and forest floor. The medium-bodied palate is open and inviting. Waves of spicy fruit are delivered in a silky texture and energized by vibrant acidity, and it has a very long, nuanced finish. ~94 Robert Parker

A lovely mix of cranberries, Bing cherries, red licorice, red fruit and spices on the nose. The juicy center is framed by minerality, flower petals and gentle wood. Fresh, delicious and very drinkable. Medium-bodied. Drink or hold. ~93 James Suckling

A polished, silky, pretty and streamlined version, redolent of blood orange, warmed peach, bitter cherry and damson plum fruit. Offers light accents of savory and rose petal for perfume, with a lingering sandalwood edge on the tail end. Drink now through 2030. 2,995 cases made. ~93 Wine Spectator
