About the Wine

If you love Sancerre but hate the price creep, this is the bottle to know.

Joost and Miguela de Willebois built J. de Villebois into the Loire's go-to Sauvignon Blanc house by doing one thing better than almost anyone: sourcing across all three of Sancerre's signature terroirs - Caillottes (stones and clay), Terres Blanches (pure clay), and Silex (flint) - and blending them into a single wine that captures everything Sancerre is supposed to be.

Sancerre is the original benchmark for Sauvignon Blanc. It's the wine New Zealand and California have been chasing for fifty years - dry, vibrant, citrus-driven, and shot through with the kind of stony minerality that only comes from a specific hillside on the eastern edge of the Loire Valley.

What sets J. de Villebois apart is the team's obsession with terroir. Technical director Patrice Merceron and Sancerre-devoted winemaker Alberto Tonetto work the three soil types as a deliberate blend: Caillottes brings the bright fruit and aromatic lift, Terres Blanches adds body and richness, and Silex contributes that unmistakable flinty, mineral edge.

The winemaking is honest and traditional. Hand-tended vines, gentle pneumatic pressing, fermentation in stainless steel, then a minimum of six months on the fine lees before bottling in the spring after harvest.

No oak, no shortcuts - just clean, transparent Sancerre that lets the terroirs speak. The result is a wine that's fresh and immediately drinkable, but with enough depth and structure to take seriously at the dinner table.

For US drinkers who reach for New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc on weeknights, this is what the grape tastes like from its homeland - leaner, more mineral, less tropical, and more food-friendly.

Pour it cold with oysters, goat cheese, or a simple roast chicken and you'll understand why Sancerre has been the gold standard for nearly a century.

Tasting Notes

100% Sauvignon Blanc.

Pale green-gold in the glass. The nose opens with bright lemon zest, white grapefruit, and the signature Sancerre gooseberry, layered with subtle white flowers and a whiff of wet stone.

The palate is dry and crisp with a soft, rounded attack that builds into vibrant citrus, green apple, and a flinty mineral spine.

Medium-bodied with bright, mouth-watering acidity and a long, saline finish that pulls you straight back to the glass.
