About the Wine
Asolo Prosecco Superiore DOCG stands apart as one of Italy’s most distinguished sparkling wines, hailing from a small but exceptional zone in the Veneto region. Established in 2009 alongside Conegliano Valdobbiadene, Asolo’s DOCG status elevated it above the broader Prosecco DOC area, marking it as a “special Prosecco” with unique quality and character.
As Decanter explains, the total vineyard area for Asolo Prosecco Superiore is just under 5,400 cres—tiny compared to the 21,400 acres of Conegliano Valdobbiadene—creating a focused, terroir-driven expression. The vineyards rest on the wooded, south-facing hills beneath Monte Grappa and the Venetian Dolomites, with slopes rising up to 450 metres. The combination of warm yet balanced summers, cooling mountain air, and varied soils—calcareous marl adding herbal elegance, and ferrous clay lending a savory mineral edge—gives Asolo wines their distinctive freshness and complexity.
The region’s history stretches back to 1874, when viticultural pioneer Antonio Carpéné identified Asolo’s hills as ideal for growing Glera, the grape behind Prosecco. Today, Asolo Prosecco Superiore DOCG is made exclusively from 100% Glera grapes, crafted by the Charmat method to preserve its fine, persistent bubbles.
From fewer than two million bottles produced in 2013, production has surged to over 24 million bottles in 2022, propelled by the region’s growing reputation but still reflecting a smaller, artisanal scale compared to mass-market Prosecco.
“Superiore” in Prosecco terms signifies the highest quality level, protected by Italy’s DOCG designation. It mandates stricter production rules: lower yields, hand harvesting, and grapes from defined superior areas like Asolo. The “Superiore” label guarantees a refined, premium sparkling wine with exceptional balance and character — a clear step above standard Prosecco DOC bottlings.
It started back in the 1920s when Mario Polegato planted those very first vines. Since then, four generations of the Moretti Polegato family have been shaking things up—mixing old-school passion with fresh ideas—to craft a Prosecco that’s ready to steal the spotlight at your next get-together.
The magic happens when those grapes get a gentle press and then chill in cool tanks, letting their bright citrus and floral aromas shine. When the timing’s just right, the bubbly gets bottled with that perfect sparkle and pop, waiting to dance in your glass.
At 11% alcohol and a touch of sweetness, it’s easy-drinking fun, best served chilled—because nothing says party like a cold glass of bubbles.
Tasting Notes:
Glera. Villa Sandi Asolo Prosecco Superiore Brut dances on the palate with lively bubbles that burst into bright notes of zesty lemon, crisp green apple, and delicate white blossoms. A subtle mineral streak adds a refreshing edge, while hints of ripe pear and a touch of honeyed sweetness round out the experience—light, vibrant, and utterly irresistible from the very first sip.
Critical Reviews
Bright pale gold with persistent mousse. On the nose, the aromas are dominated by slight reductive notes. On the palate however, well balanced and harmonious, a pleasing wine with lively bubbles, leaving you wanting another glass ~92 Falstaff
A particularly elegant and gentle Prosecco, the mousse a little less aggressive than some and the ripe, sweet fruit and even a little bread hint of autolysis and ozone freshness very appealing. Good balance, the sharpness of the acidity in the Brut wine honing a keen edge. ~90 Tom Cannavan
Fragrant and refined, this fresh, foaming sparkler opens with heady scents of hawthorn and summer orchard fruit. On the vibrant palate, bright acidity and a frothy mousse accompany ripe yellow apple, Bartlett pear and a hint of lemon drop. ~90 Wine Enthisiast
