Winemaker Dwight Bonewell of the celebrated Grand Napa Vineyards spearheads the Heir Apparent series of Napa wines, a line of thoughtfully produced wines from Napa’s best AVAs that are hand-crafted with care and whole-hearted resolve. The goal of Heir Apparent is to craftultra-luxury winesmeant to be treasured in a wine lover’s cellar.

Thiscomplex and savory red from Heir Apparent is sourced from some of Spring Mountain AVA’s best fruit. The rich volcanic soils and vineyards planted at elevations of 1,300 to 2,000 feet above sea level are ideal for traditional Bordeaux grapes. Merlot-based and blended with carefully-selected small amounts of Cab Sauv and Cab Franc,Bonewell is involved in every step of the winemaking process of this winebecause ultimately, it’s the commitment of the winemaker that separates the mediocre wines from the memorable ones.

2019 was a “near perfect” vintage in Napa, according to Bloomberg, and it’s clear the 2019 Heir Apparent Spring Mountain District Red was birthed out of that near perfection. It’s also an example of how Bonewell consistently produces wines that wow from across Napa, capturing that oh-so-desiredsense of place from various regions. For Spring Mountain, that sense of place comes across in thesoft and balanced structure of the mountain fruit—withexpressive tannins due to the cooler Spring Mountain region—that shows up in this wine.

Heir Apparent is (not yet) as well known as Grand Napa Vineyards, but they are just as meticulously produced, yet priced slightly lower. Because they’re less well-known, we’ve been able to secure a small number of bottles of the 2019 Heir Apparent Spring Mountain District Red at such significant savings that this wine will be gone in the blink of an eye!

Tasting NotesBlend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Ruby red. Intense and complex nose of blackberry, vanilla, and hazelnuts. Rich, lush dark fruits, lavender, olives, and explosive chocolate on the finish. Soft, balanced with expressive tannins.

A blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2019 Heir Apparent Red Wine Cellar Selection features scents of cedar, loam and ripe cherries. Medium to full-bodied, this is nicely rounded and harmonious, with hints of mocha, a silky feel and a long finish. No need to cellar this wine any further. ~92 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

A savory-fruit expression with rhubarb, tobacco and cedary undertones to the plums and dried orange peel. Quite juicy, crunchy and fluid, with a medium body that shows nice drinkability and refined tannins. Long, savory finish. Drink now. ~91 James Suckling
