Why South African Wines?
The most dramatic wine landscape on earth, and prices that undercut its quality - the Cape is the smart buyer's playground.
Old-Vine Chenin Blanc
Chenin is South Africa's most planted grape and its calling card: dry, textured whites from gnarled old vines. We've stocked Raats' Old Vines Chenin - the benchmark.
Stellenbosch Pedigree
Ocean breeze, altitude and decomposed granite make Stellenbosch Cabernet country. Kanonkop, Rust en Vrede, De Toren, Neil Ellis - the names we have poured tell the story.
A Wine Journey Through the Cape
Forty minutes from Cape Town, the winelands begin.
Stellenbosch
The Cape's Bordeaux: Cabernet Sauvignon and blends with real structure, plus serious Chardonnay from some of the country's oldest vines. Our South African shelf has always leaned hard on Stellenbosch.
Paarl & Franschhoek
Twenty minutes further: Paarl brings robust, smooth reds; Franschhoek - the old Huguenot valley - brings history, cellars and some of the most renowned wineries in the country.
Constantia & the Sweet Legend
Where Cape wine began in 1685 - and home of Vin de Constance, the legendary dessert wine ordered by Napoleon in exile. We've stocked three vintages of the Klein Constantia revival.
South African Wine, Answered
What is Pinotage?
South Africa's own grape - a 1926 cross of Pinot Noir and Cinsault. It earned a rough reputation in the coffee-and-chocolate era, but the new generation makes it fresh, red-fruited and genuinely delicious. Worth re-trying.
What is South Africa's best wine region?
For structured reds, Stellenbosch - ocean breeze, altitude and granite soils make world-class Cabernet. Paarl and Franschhoek neighbor it with their own styles, and Constantia owns the sweet-wine legend.
Is South African Chenin Blanc good?
It's the best-value serious white in the world right now: old-vine fruit, dry and textured, from the country's most planted grape. Producers like Raats set the benchmark - we've stocked both their Old Vines and Original bottlings.
What is Vin de Constance?
The Cape's legendary Muscat dessert wine from Constantia, famous since the 1700s - Napoleon had it shipped to his exile on St. Helena. Klein Constantia revived it, and we've stocked the 2018, 2019 and 2021.
