About The Wine

The Seggio is a stream that runs down from the hills above Bolgheri and through Poggio al Tesoro's vineyards, washing stone and minerals into the clay as it goes. That mix gives the estate its mineral character, and Il Seggio is named for the stream that made it. The wine tastes like the ground: dark fruit, a mineral backbone, and tannins that grip without punishing.

The blend is classic Bolgheri: 50% Merlot for flesh, 20% each Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc for structure, and 10% Petit Verdot for spine. It's estate-grown, sustainably farmed, and aged about a year in French barriques. It drinks polished and complete at under thirty dollars, the kind of Bolgheri that doesn't make you choose between density and drinkability.

In the glass it's inky ruby, with dark plum and cocoa on the nose and a mineral seam through the center. The tannins are silky and coat without cloying. It's full-bodied but juicy and clean. The oak shows as vanilla and toast on the finish without taking over. This is fruit-driven Tuscan red with enough structure for a ribeye and enough polish to drink on its own.

It's my pick for Tuesday-night pasta or weekend steak night, when you want real Bolgheri character at an everyday price. Open it now and give it a good decant for the plush, velvety side, or lay a few bottles down: James Suckling expects it to come fully together after 2027.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Attractive ripe cherries and redcurrants with rose-petal aromas that follow through to a full body with creamy tannins that are polished and like fine velvet. Juicy finish. Tight at the end. Needs three or four years to come completely together. Try after 2027. ~95 James Suckling

A blend of 50% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Petit Verdot, the Poggio al Tesoro 2022 Bolgheri Rosso Il Seggio (with 120,000 bottles released) shows dark fruit, spice and savory touches of cured tobacco. There is a note of graphite or lead pencil as well. The wine is fleshy in texture with soft, velvety appeal that works for near-term drinking. ~92 Wine Advocate

Displaying an inky red color, the 2022 Il Seggio opens to brooding aromas of baked black cherries, sappy earth, toasted cedar, and crushed Mediterranean herbs. It fills the palate with broad, expanding tannins, a rich mid-palate, and a hearty finish, with a light gamey richness. This is a robust Rosso to drink over the coming 8-10 years. ~91 Jeb Dunnuck

THE PRODUCER

Poggio Al Tesoro

Poggio al Tesoro began in 2001, when Marilisa and Walter Allegrini brought their family’s winemaking expertise to Bolgheri on Tuscany’s coast. With vineyards shaped by Mediterranean sunshine, cooling sea breezes, and diverse soils, the estate produces wines that combine richness with freshness and finesse. Its flagship Sondraia Bolgheri Superiore captures that elegant Super Tuscan style, while Dedicato a Walter showcases 100% Cabernet Franc and Solosole reveals the coastal charm of Vermentino—a compelling introduction to Tuscany beyond Sangiovese.
