About The Wine

There’s a reason why Stag's Leap Wine Cellars is revered as one of Napa Valley’s true champions. No estate can claim the title quite like Stag’s Leap, which earned its place in history during the unforgettable 1976 Judgment of Paris. That moment, a revolutionary turning point in the wine world, saw Napa rise to global prominence. At the heart of this transformation was Stag’s Leap’s SLV Cabernet Sauvignon—an unforgettable wine that triumphed over some of the most prestigious names in Bordeaux, including Chateau Mouton-Rothschild and Chateau Haut-Brion. Napa Valley was no longer just a contender; it was a force to be reckoned with, and Stag’s Leap stood at the forefront of that shift. More than four decades later, Stag’s Leap continues to produce wines that are not only award-winning but are consistently regarded among the finest in the world.

The winery’s victory in Paris was a milestone that propelled Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars into the spotlight, but its legacy is about so much more than that singular win. Under the visionary leadership of Warren Winiarski, whose dedication to excellence set the winery on its path, and the expertise of winemaker Marco DiGiulio, the estate has built a reputation for crafting wines that capture the very essence of Napa Valley’s unique terroir. These are wines that reflect the mastery of the craft, the patience of time, and the depth of knowledge passed down through generations.

Today, Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars is recognized worldwide for its exceptional estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignons. The legendary SLV, along with FAY and CASK 23, represent the pinnacle of Napa Valley winemaking. These wines are not only celebrated for their quality, but they also embody the very spirit of the estate—finesse, balance, and power, all in perfect harmony.

In 2007, Warren Winiarski made a bold decision to sell the winery to a joint venture that included Marchese Piero Antinori, the 25th-generation leader of the famed Antinori family of Italy, and Ste. Michelle Wine Estates. This partnership marked the beginning of a new chapter in Stag’s Leap’s storied history. But the story didn’t end there. In 2023, Marchese Antinori honored the promise he made to Warren back in 2007, acquiring full ownership of Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars and returning the winery to the Antinori family. This move not only preserves the winery’s storied past but ensures its continued commitment to excellence, sustainability, and innovation for generations to come.

Sustainability is at the heart of Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars’ vision today. The winery has embraced eco-friendly practices such as cover crops, soil amendments, and water conservation, earning the prestigious “Napa Green” certification. This commitment to the environment mirrors their dedication to producing world-class wines while safeguarding the land for future generations of wine lovers.

From its groundbreaking victory in Paris to its current status as one of Napa’s finest estates, Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars is a true legend in the world of wine. Decades of accolades and innovations have only solidified its place among the best, and today, it remains a symbol of the extraordinary potential of Napa Valley. Experience the craftsmanship that helped redefine a region and discover why Stag’s Leap continues to capture the hearts and palates of wine enthusiasts worldwide.

Delivers expressive aromas of mocha, chocolate-covered cherry, crushed raspberry, olive, and thyme. Rich and flavorful, the wine is well-structured with fine-grained tannins. The palate has a pleasing brambleberry note that leads to a long finish with a hint of oak spice.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Primary vineyard sources are estate-owned and span multiple Napa Valley sites: 42% from Atlas Peak (notably the Antica Estate), 11% from Coombsville (Arcadia), 11% from St Helena, 11% from Calistoga, and 3% from the Stags Leap District. The wine was fermented entirely in stainless steel, then aged for 14 months in 57% new French oak. Fragrant aromatics of dark berry fruit lead, layered with bay laurel and sagebrush freshness, cassis, and a lift of graphite. The palate delivers excellent density and poise, framed by polished tannins and loamy, volcanic earth, with rich Indian spice accents and salty, crushed-stone minerality carrying through the long, resonant finish. ~95 Decanter

The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Artemis is fabulous. Black cherry, plum, lavender, licorice and chocolate are front and center. Brisk acids lend freshness to this boisterous, hugely delicious Cabernet Sauvignon. Best of all, the 2023 is a terrific value. It will drink well on release. ~ 93 Vinous Media

Approximately 70% of the Artemis bottling now comes from Antinori-owned vineyards, with the balance made up of purchased fruit. The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Artemis is a fine example, with gentle herbal shadings of sage and thyme bringing savory complexity to the cassis and cherry fruit along with hints of cedar and mocha. It's medium- to full-bodied and silky in texture, with a sprinkling of fine-grained tannins on the finish. Enjoy this fairly priced wine over the next decade. ~ 91 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
