About the Wine
Hundred Acre is one of those estates, where if you are in the know then you know. The quality of the wines made here is almost impossible to describe without using words like ethereal, sublime, and perfection. These highly coveted bottles regularly flirt with perfection. In fact, the ARK bottling has only ever scored outside of the 90s five times in its history, and those all received 100 points. There is only so much praise one place can receive, Hundred Acre no longer pursues critical ratings.
Jayson Woodbridge is the genius behind Hundred Acre since its inception in 1998. Imagine this: In only his second attempt, his wines earned a coveted spot on the Wine Spectator Top 100 list, and between 2002 and 2015, they notched up over twenty perfect 100-point scores from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate.
Now, fast forward to the resurrection of his Fortunate Son brand. After years of relentless searching for the perfect vineyard plots, Jayson brings us "The Dreamer," "The Diplomat," and "The Warrior." These wines hail from charming, family-owned vineyards, and they're crafted with the utmost care in Hundred Acre's state-of-the-art underground winery.
Hundred Acre commands $750 a bottle—and rightfully so. But what if you could taste that same handcrafted brilliance from the exact same winemaker and production style… at a fraction of the price? This new release comes from younger vines, but make no mistake—it’s cut from the same rarefied cloth. Power, finesse, pedigree—without the three-digit sting. If you know, you know. And now, you can drink like a collector without spending like one....
The Diplomat hails from a small heritage site on Oakville’s western side. It is part of Fortunate Son, an overarching project that showcases the heights viticulture can reach when unhampered by compromise, where superior farming practices directly shape the wine's character.
Jayson and Jim Barbour, acclaimed for their two decades of work at Hundred Acre, honor this vineyard’s generational family farmer by applying their time-honed principles and practices.
The Dreamer can be enjoyed when you are looking for inspiration and it can be enjoyed in times of stress, like when you’re asked to attend a birthday party for your sister’s 3-year-old (your nephew who looks like a small Shar-pei dog as he is overfed) and her friends other 20 screaming menaces. I suggest at least a bottle before departure, one during, and another upon arriving home from the gates of hell. ~Jayson
Aging: 30-32 months in 100% new French oak.
Tasting Notes
100% Cabernet Sauvignon. The Dreamer is a deep ruby beauty with a nose full of blueberries, blue figs, and a touch of vanilla. On the palate, it's smooth and silky, with flavors of red currant and Rainier cherry. The long finish is a work of art. This wine is a dark, brooding beast, full of elegance and power. It's like a Wagner opera, but in liquid form. A truly magical wine.
Critical Reviews
Blackberry and black cherry with some lead pencil. Medium to full body with round and juicy tannins and a long and flavorful finish. Savory and flavorful. Smoky. Just a hint of thyme and sage. Lovely velvety tannins. Drink now or hold. ~97 James Suckling
The Dreamer 2022 fills the mouth with dark cherry and raspberry fruit, layered with leather, tobacco, and crushed cocoa nibs. Lush cherry compote and fine cedarwood spice add depth and warmth, leading to a full-bodied richness that feels both powerful and ephemeral. Crafted from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, it was aged 30–32 months in ultra–tight-grained French oak barriques, lending polish and subtle structure to this deeply expressive wine. ~97 Decanter
