About the Wine

Tasmania is an island state in Australia. This wine region, which was in the past overlooked by Australian wines, has recently been sneaking into the radar thanks to its unique, premium wines. James Suckling advises If you’re a fan of high-quality cool-climate wine, there’s a lot to like about Tasmania.”

Jansz is a luxury winery that specializes in high-quality Sparkling wine. This winery was bought by the Hill-Smith family in 1986. The Hill-Smith family is a big name in the Australian wine industry, owning more than 19 estates throughout the continent.

This innovative and unique winery has invented and registered “The Méthode Tasmanoise” which they claim to be more than just a sparkling production method, and more of a “Tasmanian way of life and respect for the environment, the natural wilderness, the clean air, fertile soils, pristine waters, the untamed oceans. It embraces people who believe in minimal intervention and working with nature rather than trying to subdue it. People with abundant energy, an entrepreneurial spirit and a willingness to dream. People who create, for the sheer joy of making something as great as it can be.”

Tasmania is without a doubt the nation’s premier sparkling wine region. Thanks to the perfect combination of the cool weather, -a climate that is very similar to northeast France,- the island’s pristine environment, and its rich soils, this region has idyllic conditions to plant Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, delivering luxurious, intense, and aromatic wines.

Janzs is dedicated to producing premium sparkling wines, using the traditional Méthode Champenoise for all its vintage wines.

2014 was an amazing year for the island. James Suckling said that this was a year that “brought both power and detail into play.”

For creating Janzs’s Vintage Cuvée, the best fruit from the vineyard is selected and hand-picked. The wine spends about 4 years aging in its lees, which provides complexity, unctuosity, and elegance. This wine has become thetrademark of Jansz Tasmania.

Aging: 7 months in oak barrels.

Tasting Notes: 51% Chardonnay 49% Pinot Noir. Pale gold with a delicate bead and fine mousse. Intense aromas of fresh citrus zest, almond nougat, and freshly baked brioche, with underlying notes of hazelnut and sea spray. The palate is refined and elegant, with notes of preserved lemon, crème brûlée, and hazelnuts.

Reviews

This blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir spends four years on lees, resulting in a richer, more complex wine than Jansz's nonvintage cuveé. A nose of apple and pear skins marries with soft honey, toast, and floral notes. The palate is chalky in texture, with vibrant bubbles, yeasty honey-flecked apple fruit, and a lengthy finish. Drink now. ~93 Wine Enthusiast

Limpid yellow-gold. Deep-pitched, mineral-accented aromas of pear nectar, red currant, and orange pith; a smoky lees nuance builds in the glass. Concentrated orchard and pit fruit flavors are supported and energized by a core of juicy acidity. A floral note appears on the long, gently chewy finish, which echoes the pear and orange notes. This wine spent four years on its lees before disgorgement. ~93 Vinous Media
