About the Wine

The first records of Quinta da Romaneira date back to 1757, when Marquis of Pombal, a Portuguese diplomat, ordered the official registration of the Quinta. This estate was recognized among the Portuguese elite and wine connoisseurs of the time. It was mentioned in several works of important authors like Henry Vizetelly or The Viscount of Vila Maior, who called the wines from Romaneira “one of the best in the Douro, notable for its smoothness, body, and aroma."

The century-old Quinta passed through the hands of different owners, all of which contributed to positive changes. And finally, in 2012, André Esteves, made his wine dream a reality, when he became the principal investor of Romaneira, in partnership with Christian Seely, CEO, and shareholder since 2004. With these two successful businessmen at the helm, the Quinta has consolidated among the elite producers of wines and Ports in the Douro region.

Quinta da Romaneira is one of the largest estates in the region. The estate is made up of over 1000 acres and 1.8 miles of river frontage on the river Douro. The 212-acre vineyard is magnificent, with old vines of native grapes like Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa, Tinta Roriz, and Tinto Cão that are planted on pronounced terraces on steeply sloping hills. Leonor Sequeira is the mastermind behind these beautiful wines. Her expertise includes working in some of the most recognized wineries in Port like Quinta do Noval and Ramos Pinto.

Made 100% with grapes from vines classified “A” quality from Quinta da Romaneira, located in the heart of the Douro Valley. The grapes were trodden by foot and vinified in stainless steel “lagares” with temperature control between 25 and 28 degrees Celsius.

Aging: 20 months in wooden barrels.

Tasting Notes: 70% Touriga Nacional, 20% Touriga Franca, 10% Tinto CaoExcellent deep purple-ruby color. Superb aromatic personality with abundant spice and wild Douro flower notes, fig, mint, black plum, and dark chocolate flavors that explode in the mouth. Sweet, full-bodied with a great round tannic structure and balance that ends in a very long and lingering finish.

Reviews

Dark ruby garnet, violet reflections, delicate rim lightening. Blackberry fruit with a delicate floral underlay, a hint of cassis and candied violets, fresh orange zest, attractive bouquet. Juicy, red berry nuances, fine, mature tannins, good freshness, sweet finish, lively, peppery finish, very good vintage character, definite development potential. ~94 Falstaff

This is ripe, in a sweet vein, and slightly high-pitched, with a stream of raspberry, cherry, and plum pâte de fruit notes gilded with floral and incense accents. A light warm cocoa hint through the finish adds a touch of bass. Shows lots of charm and elegance. Seductive. Best from 2030 through 2045. 1,000 cases made, 50 cases imported. ~93 Wine Spectator

A jammy wine with fresh acidity as well as bright fruit. It seems to have missed out on structure although smoky fruit is right there. That suggests a wine that will age relatively quickly. Think about drinking this wine from 2026. ~92 Wine Enthusiast
