About the Wine

Château Langoa Barton tells us the fascinating story of an Irish family who came to France in 1722 and started in the industry as wine merchants. Through a long time of effort and work, in 1745 they bought Château Le Boscq in St. Estèphe. And in that same year, they partnered with the Gustier family of Bordeaux, and together they founded the renewed brand to this day: Barton et Gustier.

It was in 1821 that the family acquired Pontet-Langlois, which eventually became Château Langoa Barton. Shortly after, the family acquired the Château Leoville Barton but because that Château didn’t have a vat room, the wines were produced in Langoa Barton, however, the style of the wine is very different from each other.

Both estates are located on the Left Bank of Bordeaux, within the Médoc in the famous Saint Julien appellation. Château Langoa Barton is one of the few estates in this region that has remained a family-owned property for two hundred years! Currently in charge of Anthony Barton and Lilian Barton.

The charming Château Langoa Barton neighbors Chateau Leoville Barton, Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou, and Chateau Beychevelle. The vineyard of 44 acres is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Vines are 32 years old on average, although a few of them were planted back in 1953. The beautiful terroir is composed of gravel and clay soils. Eric Boissenot is the technical director, and with him as the oenological consultant, the wine is guaranteed success!

2020 was a great year for Bordeaux. Vinous Media blessed this year with a 97-point review and said, "Two thousand-twenty is an exceptional vintage for Bordeaux, certainly the best in the 2018-2020 trilogy. Quality is very, very high."

Aging: 60% new French oak barrels for approximately 20 months.

Tasting Notes: 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc. Powerful wine. Floral notes and a touch of acacia. Perfect balance, full and lush, rounded off with long, tasty tannins. Pair this wine with hearty fish courses like tuna, mushrooms and pasta as well as cheese.

Reviews

Loads of red and black currants, lead pencil shavings, tobacco, and dried flower notes emerge from the 2020 Château Langoa Barton, a gorgeous looking 2020 offering medium to full-bodied richness, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It has the concentrated, backward vibe of the vintage yet brings remarkable opulence and texture. It's impressive. ~94-96 Jeb Dunnuck

One of three properties owned by the Barton family, this has become an estate with a great personality, no longer in the shadow of Léoville-Barton. This latest vintage shows both great structure and layers of black fruits. It has a perfumed style that brings complex ripeness and, obviously, a fine potential. ~95 Wine Enthusiast

Sporting a deep purple-black color, the 2020 Langoa Barton needs a little swirling to unlock youthfully muted scents of warm cassis, black cherry preserves and boysenberries, plus hints of menthol, graphite, tilled soil and bouquet garni. The medium-bodied palate is delicately played with impressive freshness delivered by the red berry and herbal sparks within a black-fruit core, with grainy tannins to support, finishing long and invigorating. ~93-95 Wine Advocate

Very pretty blackberry and blueberry character with blackcurrants and mint. It’s medium-to-full-bodied with linear, tight tannins that are polished and fine ~93-94 James Suckling

Not quite as generous as Léoville Barton, replaced with classicism and subdued tannins, as we see the impact of a slightly cooler terroir. Juicy finish, black fruits, plenty of life and lift through the palate. Enjoyable, but closed in with clove spice that is very clear on the finish. Tasted twice. A yield of 34hl/ha. Harvest September 14 to 28. ~92 Decanter

The 2020 Langoa Barton is an absolute delight. It offers the radiance of the year but in the mid-weight, understated style that is such a Langoa signature. Bright red cherry fruit, blood orange, mint, rose petal and cedar give the 2020 a whole range of bright aromas and flavors that bristle with energy. This is such a pretty wine. ~90-92 Vinous Media
