About the Wine

Over the past 20 years or more, Feudi di San Gregorio, in southern Italy’s Campania region, has played a leading role in fostering a winemaking revolution that extends across southern Italy and has led to a remarkable resurgence of regional wine industries. Throughout its short yet prolific history, the estate’s proprietors have cultivated Campania & Apulia’s finest vineyards and worked closely with some of Italy’s best enologists. The results have been remarkable — the wines of Feudi di San Gregorio meet time and again with stellar reviews and consistently garner international critical acclaim.

This highly acclaimed winery Encourages us to rediscover the identity of Mediterranean flavors through indigenous grapes that reach their full potential with their modern winemaking approach. Serpico is an Aglianico from their historic “Dal Re” vineyard.

Aging: 18 months in new French Oak

Tasting notes:Red Wine. 100% Aglianico. Ruby red color. A complete bouquet of cherry jam, sweet spices, licorice, coffee, and cacao. Balanced in the mouth; spicy minerality and great persistence. Excellent with roasted red meats, the finest poultry, game, and aged cheeses.

Reviews

Wonderfully alive in the glass, the 2009 Serpico (Aglianico) is terrific in this vintage. A layered, beautifully expressive wine, the 2009 flows across the palate with dark fruit. Game, smoke, tobacco, cloves and incense develop later, adding gravitas and weight, but without excess heaviness. Feudi has done a wonderful job of preserving tons of varietal character, while giving this Aglianico a measure of pure polish and finesse I don’t remember seeing in the past. The 2009 is so striking in its beauty it can be enjoyed today, but there will be even more reward for those who can wait at least a few years more. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029. Once again, Feudi impresses for the sheer breadth of their range. From top to bottom, this is a terrific set of wines from one of the benchmark wineries in Campania, and all of Italy, for that matter. ~93 Robert Parker

This red shows loads of spices such as cloves and dried rosemary with plums and light raisins. Full body, silky tannins, and a fresh finish. Turns slightly nutty. Stylish wine. More balanced than the 2008. Drink or hold. ~93 James Suckling

Underbrush, leather, dense black plum, black cherry, clove, and black pepper all meld seamlessly together in the glass. This is still young, with aggressive tannins and nervous acidity that need time to tame, but going forward, it should develop layers of complexity. This will be even better after 2019 ~91 Wine Enthusiast
