The 2016 vintage of Brunello di Montalcino has been called a 5-star vintage. A 99 point vintage. Radiance personified. This Martoccia Brunello di Montalcino is from thatvintage where temperatures, sun, and rain came together perfectly, and it shows in this wine.
This is a red wine of extraordinary elegance and concentration, crafted in the cellars of the Brunelli Estate from grapes grown in some of their most important vineyards that extend over the southwest side of Montalcino at an altitude of about 250 meters. In 1995, the Brunelli family planted these vines on their Martoccia farm, adding more vines through the years.
Tenuta Brunelli employs cultivation techniques that favor low yields, resulting in quality fruit that creates great wines. Brunello is theirflagship wine, a standout wine made from Sangiovese (the only grape permitted in Brunello di Montalcino). Fermented for about 20 days before going through malolactic fermentation, the wine was aged in part Slavonian oak barrels and part French oak barrique according to Brunello di Montalcino DOCG aging requirements. After bottling, it aged another 6 months before release.
Vintage Report from James Suckling:
"If you ever wanted a Brunello di Montalcino for your cellar to age for decades, then buy the 2016 vintage when the wines come out in the market in January 2021. The 2016 vintage marks the second great year in a row for Brunello di Montalcino following the sensational 2015, which is currently on the market."
Aging: 36 months, split between Slavonian oak barrels and French oak barrique.
Tasting Notes: 100% Sangiovese. In the glass, there are pretty aromas of cherry, plum, ripe strawberry, cola, sage, and spices. Silky and smooth, on the palate, it’s fresh, full of red fruits and herbal notes. Medium-bodied, balanced with firm tannins and lively acidity, the finish goes on and on ending with a hint of mushroom. Still young. If opening now, decant. Open for 10+ years. Serve with red meats or game, dishes with hearty mushrooms, and aged cheeses.
It is delightful on the nose in the floral profile reminiscent of lavender, magnolia blossoms, blue plums, and blueberry juice. Grapefruit peel burrow in the background gives pleasure in the secondary scene. Medium-full body, sweet tannins of perfect extraction, and a juicy and bright finish. Better from 2021. ~94 Winescritic.com

A tight, tannic Brunello with cherry, bark, black-truffle, and toffee aromas and flavors. It’s medium-bodied, linear, and tight. Nice dark mushroom and fruit at the end. Drink in 2022. ~92 James Suckling
Martoccia’s 2016 Brunello is ripe with aromatics of cola, black cherry, and sage. The palate is savory with dried plum, pine, black tea, and brushy earth, and a moderate finish with youthfully firm tannins. Cellar for 3-5 years and drink 2024-2031. ~92 Jeb Dunnuck
The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino from Martoccia di Brunelli is remarkably pretty, showing dusty dried florals and white smoke giving way to notes of ripe strawberry and plum. It’s silky in texture and a more savory expression of fruit, complemented by inner herbal and florals tones. Brisk acids maintain an energetic feel, even as grippy tannins slowly mount. This finishes classically structured and a bit crunchy, tapering off with mineral-laced tart berries. ~91 Vinous Media
