About the Wine 

You may know that Chile produces fantastic wines, but how much do you know about any of its regions, like the Colchagua Valley where Emiliana—the 2015 Wines of Chile Winery of the year award recipient—grows the organic grapes for its 94-point Coyam?

Central Chile’s Colchagua Valley sits within one of the largest and oldest wine regions in the country, The Rapel Valley. The Mediterranean climate in Colchagua is ideal for wine growing, where its close-the-equator warmth is tempered by the cooling influences of the Pacific Ocean. It’s here that grapes like Carmenère, Malbec, Syrah, and Merlot thrive in the granite-enriched soils on the slopes surrounding the valley’s foothills that benefit from the silt and clay that wash down from the surrounding Andes.

Now that the short and sweet regional lesson is done, let’s move on to this red blend that’s a perfect example of how spectacular Chile’s wines can be. It’s in Colchagua Valley that Emiliana grows the many varieties of grapes that go into Coyam red made of Syrah, Carmenère, and 7 other varieties that blend together harmoniously in this organic wine. Coyam is bold and structured, juicy and intense—a masterpiece from Emiliana and a wine that more than punches above its price. If we were to offer the same quality wine from a more well-known region, it would certainly be twice this price. This versatile wine pairs wonderfully with red meat, but white meat dishes that are peppery, have a blue cheese sauce or a garlic butter sauce go equally well with this red blend. 

Aging: 18 months, 75% in 225 L French oak barrels (mix of new barrels, second- and third use), 15% in 2,000- and 5,000-liter foudres, and 10% in concrete eggs.

Tasting Notes: 38% Syrah, 33% Carmenère, 8% Cabernet sauvignon, 5% Carignan, 4% Malbec, 4% Garnacha, 3% Tempranillo, 3% Petit Verdot and 2% Mourvedre. In the glass, the wine is cherry-red in color with raspberry-colored borders and medium intensity. Black fruits dominate—blueberry, black cherry, blackberry—plus a hint of fig, but there are also floral notes of lavender and violet. Its time in oak gives it hints of spice like sweet tobacco, cedar, and licorice. On the palate, it’s juicy and friendly with a creamy texture.

A very intense Coyam with lots of dark fruit, such as blackberries and plums, as well as dry earth and roses. Some stems and tobacco, too. It’s full-bodied and layered with lots of fruit and chewy tannins. Juicy and intense. Lightly stewed fruit at the center palate.
