About the Wine

"Is this a unique wine in the whole wide world? My guess would be yes: it's a Tannat from Uruguay, fortified with brandy much like a Port or Madeira, and infused with aromatic herbs, flowers, and spices." ~Tom Cannavan

Viñedo de los Vientos is located 2.5 miles from the Atlantic Ocean in Atlantida, part of Uruguay’s Canelones region. This place is one of the coolest growing areas in the entire country.

Pablo Fallabrino is the owner, grower, and winemaker of Viñedo de los Vientos. He lives on the estate with his wife and two children. His grandfather, Angelo Fallabrino immigrated to Uruguay in 1920 from Piedmont and planted 5 vineyards, and started 2 wineries in the 1930s.

Pablo studied with both his father and grandfather and eventually started the current, single vineyard estate in 1997 where they currently have 29 acres of vines. Viñedo de los Vientos produces mostly Piedmontese varietals in addition to Tannat. These wines show an old-world, nuanced style.

This wine is made in a combination of a Chinato and Marsala method with roots and herbs and fortified with brandy. A truly outstanding dessert wine.

Aging: 12 months in used French oak.

Tasting Notes: 100% Tannat.

Reviews

Is this a unique wine in the whole wide world? My guess would be yes: it's a Tannat from Uruguay, fortified with brandy much like a Port or Madeira, and infused with aromatic herbs, flowers and spices. The label quotes "winter flowers, Madagascan vanilla bean and wild apple mint." It has a deep ruby colour tinged with tawny, and a fabulous nose: like a cup of hot chocolate to begin with, moving into spicy black fruits and all the time a slightly other-worldly set of estery aromas in the background. On the palate it is rich and thick-textured, with plenty of luscious black cherry sweetness, but again it's as though some dark chocolate had been stirred in, some orange-like bite and acidity, and a long, warming finish. Unusual for sure, and very interesting. Price for 50cls. ~91 Tom Cannavan
