About the Wine

In ancient times, “Tinazzi” was the name given to the “containers similar to barrels where the crushed grapes were put to ferment in the old Veronese winemaking tradition.” Today, “Tinazzi” is the last name of one of the most powerful and successful families in the Italian wine industry. The Tinazzi family hails from the Valpolicella region in the Veneto near Lake Garda, and they are masters of the appassimento style. They took this expertise to Puglia, in Southern Italy, and today own the San Giorgio winery where they produce award-winning wines with local grapes.

It all started in 1968 when Eugenio and his son Figli founded a small company in Verona, but as easy as this might sound, it wasn’t. Tinazzi tells a story of hard work, passion, dedication, and pursuing one's goals. The family was so poor, they “were just about to sell the chairs,” but their dream was stronger, and today, more than 50 years later, this thriving company was called by Decanter magazine “a recognized producer of high-quality wines, sold in 55 countries worldwide.” Their goal remains the same: “topromote the soul of the territories safeguarding tradition while seeking innovation.”

San Giorgio is located in Faggiano, a commune in the province of Taranto in Puglia. This estate was founded in 2001 and since its inception, the winemaking and viticulture followed sustainable practices, with an enormous focus on environmental, economic, and social responsibility.

San Giorgio’s wines are dedicated to innovation. This innovation is given by the new winery, inaugurated in 2020, and equipped with state-of-the-art technology, along with continuous research and selections of grapes. San Giorgio is driven by a “tradition-plus-innovation” mantra. Tinazzi's greatest innovation was adapting Northern Italian winemaking styles used in Amarone and applying it to Pugliese varietals like Primitivo and Negroamaro.

Diodoro is a 100% Primitivo di Manduria that will enchant you from the very first sip. The charming nose of mature red berries is perfectly intertwined with elegant and deep notes of spices, toffee, and tobacco. If you love bold, full-bodied, fruit-forward, complex red wines, you’ll adore this Primitivo.

Aging: 12 months in French and American oak barrels.

Tasting Notes100% Primitivo di Manduria. Ample bouquet with marked hints of ripe red fruits like cherries and prunes with spicy notes, especially cinnamon. Warm and enveloping, full-bodied with a persistent, intense finale. Warning: Upon opening this wine, your mouth will be filled with happiness and smiles may abound.

~97 Luca Maroni, I Migliori Vini Italiani, Guide to Italy's Best Wines 2022

Bright ruby, starting to mature. Charming nose combining cherries, plums, and delicate roasted coffee notes. Elegant exuberance coats the tastebuds right from the word go, then a virile, warm structure establishes itself. A great characterful wine. ~90 Gilbert & Gaillard (Double Gold Medal)
