About the Wine

Established in 1997, Saxon Brown focuses on small single-vineyard bottlings reflecting elegantly structured, well-balanced, and age-worthy wines. Jeff began his career at Chateau St. Jean where he worked under renowned vintner, Richard Arrowood. Jeff was part of the winemaking team responsible for the winery’s celebrated 1996 Cinq Cepages, which was named Wine of the Year by Wine Spectator Magazine. Founder/winemaker Jeff Gaffner has become one of the most sought-after winemakers for artisan labels, having gained critical acclaim and a loyal following for his site-specific focus and restrained winemaking style. The Wall Street Journal has said that they “love his vineyard voice.” Jeff has turned Saxon Brown into one of the primer wineries of the world!

The fruit for this wine comes from two vineyard blocks located in the western slopes of Sonoma Valley, within the appellation’s overlap with the Sonoma Coast AVA. The sites are distinguished by their extremely rocky soils - stones from which were used in the mid-1800’s to construct the miles of stone walls that ribbon the region. The site’s coastal influences and rocky, well-drained soils produce moderate yields of very concentrated Zinfandel.

Aging: 11 months in French Oak

Tasting Notes: This may be Saxon Brown's richest and longest ‘Stonewall” Zinfandel to date, which makes the lilting floral aromatics that much more surprising. The 2015 Stonewall Zinfandel offers jammy black cherry and sweet chocolate with hints of cinnamon and anise. Creamy caramel, chocolate, and vanillin spice emerge on the broad palate and linger on the meandering finish.

Reviews

The 2015 Zinfandel Stonewall Block is medium garnet-purple colored and has gregarious notes of baked red cherries, raspberry pie, and blueberry compote with touches of hoisin, underbrush, and raisin cake. Full-bodied, rich, and decadently spicy in the mouth, it has a lively line and plush texture, finishing on a sweet and savory note. 271 cases produced. ~91 Wine Advocate
