About the Wine

Domaine de la Vieille Julienne is home to some of the most singular wines in all of the Rhone. Only a small handful of producers in Chateauneuf-du-Pape even come close to the level that this estate produces regularly. Among the wines of this lauded estate, the Reserve reigns as king. Even in trying years this wine flirts with perfection and has critics drooling over the potential. Unfortunately, only minuscule amounts are made leaving us with a tiny allocation of just a handful of bottles. If high scores and one-way tickets to a land of bliss are your thing this is not to be missed.

Since 1905 Domaine de la Vieille Julienne has been producing wine from the small estate vineyard in Chateauneuf-du-Pape. What is particularly unique about their location is the slope these grapes are planted on faces North. We regularly hear about south-facing vineyards, but in a region as warm as the Southern Rhone Valley, this lesser exposure to the sun extends the growing season. This longer growth cycle gives the vines the gift of extremely complex aromatic profiles that beautifully translate into a harmonious wine.

Leading off the three Châteauneuf du Pape releases, the 2020 Châteauneuf du Pape Les Trois Sources comes from three different terroirs located in the northern part of the appellation, just across the street from the domaine. Roasted Provençal garrigue, black licorice, black raspberries, Asian spices, and a hint of cassis all define the bouquet, and it hits the palate with a layered, medium to full-bodied profile that has silky tannins and no hard edges. It's much more up-front and approachable than the more structured Les Hauts-Lieux and is going to drink fabulously well over the coming 15+ years.  ~96 Jeb Dunnuck

Black raspberries, flowers, garrigue, licorice, mint and a background note of fig and cocoa at the end of the nose. The wine is bright, fresh and vibrant with a peppery edge on the kirsch, black raspberries, fig and cocoa that you find on the palate. There is a brightness to the fruit that provides lift and vibrancy in the finish that resonates. The wine was made from 60% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 10% Cinsault and a myriad of various other allowable varieties.  ~96 The Wine Cellar Insider

An open, spicy style, with vibrant fruit, violets and sugared almonds. Rounded, juicy and fresh, the acidity is quite marked and the alcohol is quite high, however it's very ripe, with blackberry and liquorice within grippy tannins which need time. Vines are on three terraces on sandy soils. Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah, Counoise, Mourvèdre, Muscardin, Terret Noir, Vaccarèse, Grenache Blanc, Clairette and Picardan, with an average age of 75 years, all co-planted and co-fermented.  ~93 Decanter
