About the Wine

Out of the gates and at the time we tasted the 2015 Right Bank wines at en primeur in the Spring of 2016, the 2015s Merlot based St. Emilions have been special. Precocious, but also concentrated and contemplative. These are wines that are already delicious with incredible staying power.

According to Wine Spectator, Chateau Faugères is “One of the emerging quality estates on Bordeaux's Right Bank.”

Swiss businessman, Silvio Denz is the proud owner of this Grand Cru Clasée. He says "I am committed to combining knowledge and expertise in order to deliver the best possible wines every year."

Silvio is a huge name in the French wine bussines. He owns several other important estates in France like Château Péby Faugères, Château Cap de Faugères, Château Rocheyron, and Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey (Sauterne’s 1er Growth, and one of the oldest estates in the region,) and others in Tuscany.

Chateau Faugères, located about 3 miles away from world-renowned Château Ausone, was recognized as Saint Emilion Grand Cru in 2012. Its exceptional terroir and location on the appellation’s limestone plateau, that’s placed on calcareous limestone soils, make this the perfect place to grow outstanding vines (and produce outstanding wines!)

Combine that with the expertise of the talented winemaker Michel Rolland, who has been the consultant winemaker since 1992, and the result is this wine that Vinous Media called an "alluring Saint-Emilion."

2015 was an outstanding year for the Right Bank. Vinous Media blessed this year with a 97-point review, telling us that "Bordeaux enjoyed its strongest vintage in a number of years in 2015." Vinous described these wines as "intense and, at times, freakishly concentrated." and confirmed that "2015s on the Right Bank are superb."

Aging: 14 months, 50% in new French oak barrels, 50% in second use French oak barrels.

Tasting Notes80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. The nose has a bouquet of ripe fruit, black cherries, and floral notes. On the palate, it's extremely rich and flavourful with fine acidity. The finish is characterized by freshness and balance.

Very deep-set aromas of blackberries and red and dark plum fruits, set amid integrated oak spices, cedar, and hints of earth. The palate has a super plush feel with intense blueberries and dark plum flavors. Succulent tannins that are smooth, entrancing, and very long. Try from 2022. ~95 Points, James Suckling.

Smooth and opulent, this is a densely tannic wine. Its dark fruits and dusty texture are backed by juicy acidity and a core of framing tannins. It will be powerful and rich with age. ~94 Points, Wine Enthusiast.

The 2015 Faugeres is plush, deep, and inviting. Succulent red cherry, plum, tobacco, cedar, licorice, and new leather are some of the many nuances that take shape, and attractive floral notes add brightness and lift. This is a very pretty and alluring Saint-Emilion from Silvio Denz. The blend is 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. ~93 Points, Vinous Media.

Beautiful aromas and flavors of warm fig and boysenberry reduction lead off, with extra raspberry and cassis notes filling in behind them. Best from 2023 through 2035. ~93 Points, Wine Spectator.

The 2015 Faugeres is a blend of 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon aged for 15 months in French oak, 50% new. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, it has a nose of baked plums, warm cherries, and blackberries with touches of meat and fried spices. The full-bodied mouth is rich, opulent, and spicy with firm, velvety tannins and lovely freshness lifting the finish. ~92 Points, Robert Parker.

The 2015 Château Faugeres includes slightly less Merlot than the 2016 and is 75% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Cabernet Franc. Like a lot of 2015s, it’s already open and approachable and offers lots of cassis and black cherry fruits, plenty of spice, herbs, and earth nuances. With medium to full-bodied richness, terrific purity and elegance, and present, yet sweet tannin, I suspect it will fill in with 2-3 years in the cellar and keep for 15+. ~92 Points, Jeb Dunnuck.
