About the Wine

Located at the base of the majestic Mayacamas Mountains in the heart of Saint Helena, the Ehlers Estate vineyard is a place steeped in history. Grapes have been grown on this land since the 1800s.The story of Ehlers Estate began in 1886 when a beautiful stone winery was built, marking a lasting dedication to winemaking. Today, the talented winemaking team at Ehlers Estate continues this legacy, crafting small batches of world-class wines.

Owned by the Leducq Charitable Trust, established by the visionary Jean and Sylviane Leducq in 1996, Ehlers Estate embodies the American Dream rooted in a love for food, wine, and a touch of Bordeaux-inspired charm.

The vineyards, which are certified organic by the California Organic Farmers Organization(CCOF), yield grapes of unparalleled quality. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Sauvignon Blanc thrive under the nurturing care of Ehlers Estate's viticultural team.

Jean Leducq's journey from post-war Europe to the heights of American business success is a testament to his indomitable spirit. This adventure took Jean from the linen factories of Europe to the rolling vineyards of Napa Valley, where he pursued his dream of creating wines to rival the finest Bordeaux vintages.

Led by the skilled Spanish Winemaker Laura Diaz Munoz, the Ehlers Estate team is committed to the meticulous nurturing and careful harvesting of each grape. Laura's extensive expertise spans the globe, with valuable experience gained in regions such as Spain, Chile, and New Zealand, and in prestigious Napa Valley estates like Cardinale, Lokoya, Mt Brave, La Jota, and Galerie.

This exceptional blend takes dominance from Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc sourced from the Estate vineyard, complemented by the inclusion of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes meticulously chosen from Howell Mountain and select Napa vineyard sites.

2019 was a fabulous year for Napa Valley Cabernet. Wine Spectator awarded this year a 97-point score, and Vinous Media gave it 96 points saying that "The 2019 Napa Valley Cabernets have turned out beautifully. 2019 is a very high-quality vintage of Cabernets that will be easy to drink and enjoy with minimal cellaring. The extra kick of late heat softened the tannins, making the wines a pleasure to taste and drink."

Aging: 53% new French Oak, 22 months.

Tasting Notes89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet Franc. Its deep purple hue introduces a bouquet of concentrated aromas, including blackberries, graphite, and crushed rocks, along with cedar, tobacco leaf, cassis, and a medley of dry herbs and spices. A substantial mouthfeel, full-bodied structure, firm tannins, and a well-balanced acidity collaborate harmoniously to accentuate the intricate flavors of berry compote, spices, and oak nuances reminiscent of mocha. The wine's finish is impressively long, offering immediate enjoyment while harboring the potential for graceful aging over the next 15-20 years. Unfined/Unfiltered.

Reviews

Lovely aromas of coconut and vanilla bean coat the entry of this truly beautiful wine, which is bursting with red berry, currant and cedar on the palate. Showing impressive balance and structure, its tannins are well-managed and integrated, leaving room for considerable aging.~97 The New Wine Review

This supple, saturated, and delicious wine is only a small step behind Ehlers' flagship 1886 wine which is twice as expensive. It overflows with dark chocolate, cooked blueberries and black cherries while fine-grained tannins surround and support them for further aging. ~94 Wine Enthusiast

An array of ripe blueberries and plums with notes of licorice, coffee and a hint of mint. Full-bodied with a soft, creamy texture, mild fruit and polished tannins. Long and chocolatey. Needs to open up a little. ~92 James Suckling

Offers lightly singed cedar and vanilla notes that enhance the core of gently steeped plum and warm cassis, while a subtle tug of loam underscores the finish. Restrained style but focused and balanced, with a subtle bay leaf accent echoing through the finish. Drink now through 2030. 2,589 cases made. ~92 Wine Spectator
