About the Wine

"Poboleda is another village where Cariñena excels, and the 1902 old-vine cuvée from Mas Doix can be a very good example. If last time I was delighted because I had two vintages of that wine, this time I got three!" ~Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Since 1902, the men and women of Mas Doix have tenderly cared for the Grenache and Carignan vines nestled in the unique “llicorella” slate hills. Founded by Valenti and Ramon Llagostera in 1998, Mas Doix has committed to preserving traditional practices while embracing the challenges of the future. Their meticulous attention to every vine, combined with their respect for the environment and its rich culture, results in wines that are truly exceptional.

Every bottle of 2014 Celler Mas Doix 'Doix' is born on the vine. The team at Mas Doix practices strictly organic viticulture with biodynamic methods to ensure harmony between the environment, vineyard, and their labour. The cultivation is exclusively performed by hand, with each grape harvested and selected with critical precision.

The winemaking process, from fermentation in stainless steel vats and wooden barrels to aging in barrels, is carried out with minimal intervention. This careful approach allows the true character of the terroir to shine through, resulting in a wine that is both powerful and elegant.

Each sip of this remarkable wine tells the story of its origins—the cool, mountainous terrain of Priorat, the hot summers and icy winters, and the dedication of the people who nurture the vines. The microclimate, with its Mediterranean days and Continental nights, ensures a slower ripening process and later harvest, enhancing the wine's depth and complexity.

Enjoy the 2014 Celler Mas Doix 'Doix' with rich, hearty dishes such as roasted lamb, beef stew, or aged cheeses.

Aging: 16 months in new and second year French oak barrels.

Tasting Notes: 45% Grenache and 55% Carignan Bush vines of 70 to 100 years old all around Poboleda. Deep ruby hue, enticing with aromas of ripe blackberries, plums, and a hint of minerality from the slate soils. On the palate, it is full-bodied and complex, offering layers of dark fruit, spice, and a touch of oak. The fine tannins and balanced acidity provide a long, lingering finish that leaves a lasting impression.

The 2014 Doix Costers del Vinyes Velles checks in as 55% Carinyena and 45% Garnacha that spent 16 months in new French. Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by a beautiful perfume of blueberries, violets, graphite, lead pencil and iris flower. Just insanely pure, perfumed and complex, with full-bodied richness, this beauty glides across the palate with no weight, incredible tannin quality, no hard edges, and beautiful purity. While this cuvée used to be richer and slightly more concentrated, it’s more elegant, pure, and seamless today, without sacrificing intensity. ~96 Jeb Dunnuck

I had two vintages of the old-vine cuvée to taste side by side, starting with the 2014 Doix Costers de Vinyes Velles. Made of 55% Cariñena and 45% Garnacha from old vines on slopes on slate llicorella soils, the fermentation and aging are the same as for the centenary Carignan: fermentation in stainless steel with neutral yeasts and an élevage of 16 months in new French barriques. It has moderate alcohol and high acidity. It has already started developing some tertiary notes and shows some graphite and wet slate notes. The palate shows great balance, with concentration and freshness—what you're aiming for in a wine like this where pure power might be too much. 5,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2016. ~95 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

~94 Guía Peñín

The name references the terraces at the Doix vineyard, where the cariñena vines date to 1902, the garnacha to 1927. The blend is 55-45 cariñena-garnacha. Intensely ripe, this offers toasty notes of wood over deep black fruit flavors—vibrant in acidity, dense in body, firm in tannins. It needs about three years in the bottle to mature. ~92 Wine & Spirits
