About the Wine

Just over 1 mile away from the renowned Château Le Pin and cult estate Château Trotanoy, you find the beautiful Le Clos du Beau Pere. A little 9-acre winery that was acquired by Jean-Luc Thunevin and Murielle Andraud in 2006.

Jean Luc Thunevin became a well-known figure in the wine world in less than a decade, thanks to its successful garage wine, Château Valandraud, which today is a Saint Emilion 1st Growth. The same quality that goes to this 1st growth, is implemented in all of Thunevin’s wines. All of Jean-Luc's wines are produced with a constant commitment to excellence.

Jean Luc was labeled the "Bad Boy" of Bordeaux by Robert Parker years ago. His "garagiste" style is akin to the great technology companies of Silicon Valley that grew up in a garage and disrupted the establishment. Jean-Luc did just that by making the best wines possible and releasing the wines at affordable pricesHis efforts have been rewarded with high praise and consistent top scores.

Le Clos du Beau Pere, translated to father-in-law's enclosure, couldn’t be placed in a more ideal terroir, with vineyards located in soils composed of deep gravel and planted with Merlot and Cab Franc vines aged 50 years old.

This is the perfect scenario to produce the outstanding 2016 Le Clos Du Beau Pere Pomerol. A wine that's loved not only by us, but by some of the most important wine critics in the world, like James Suckling who called it an "Attractive, Great Pomerol," and Jed Dunnuck referring to it as a "Sexy Pomerol."

2016 was an epic vintage for the Right Bank. Vinous Media blessed this year with a 98-point review, where they stated that "The 2016s are absolutely remarkable wines. The word that comes to mind, unfortunately so often overused, is balance. Absolutely harmonious. The 2016 Right Bank reds are remarkably polished and sensual."

This is indeed a sexy Pomerol that's ready to drink today, but still has plenty of time to age beautifully. It’s pure joy and amarena cherry in glass!

Aging: 16 months in French oak new barrels.

Tasting Notes: 90% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc.

Reviews

Beautiful, attractive, spicy oak layered across ripe plums and mulberries, leading to a very plush and smooth array of ripe, velvety tannins. Great Pomerol. So silky. Try from 2022. ~93 James Suckling.

Made with help from the incredibly talented Claude Gros and Jean Luc Thunevin, the 2016 Le Clos du Beau Père (85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc) comes from more sandy, gravelly soils and was brought up in 40% new French oak. It’s a medium to full-bodied, powerful wine yet it still has considerable elegance as well as purity of fruit. Terrific notes of blackberries, black cherries, chocolate, and violets all flow from the glass. This sexy Pomerol is ideal for drinking over the coming 15+ years. ~93 Jeb Dunnuck.

The 2016 Le Clos du Beau-Pere is a modern wine built on textural depth and intensity. Sweet tobacco, chocolate, espresso and dried cherry all meld together in this racy, plush Pomerol. The 2016 is not especially subtle, but it is quite delicious, fun and full of personality. ~93 Vinous Media.

This delivers a big up-front display of raspberry, boysenberry and açaí berry pâte de fruit notes, with anise and fruitcake flavors filling in on the finish. Offers enough spine to carry it off, though this is likely to mature on the earlier side. Best from 2021 through 2031. 1,250 cases made. ~91 Wine Spectator.
