About the Wine

Pauillac, with its rich history and unique microclimate near the Gironde River, has given birth to some of Bordeaux's most famous wines. Chateau Fonbadet is no exception, crafting wines that showcase the essence of this remarkable terroir.

Nestled in the iconic Pauillac appellation, Chateau Fonbadet has a storied history that dates back to the early 19th century when it was acquired by Pierre de Gérès de Loupes, a Knight of Malta and a Member of Parliament. His relentless dedication set the stage for generations to come, with each owner preserving the estate's unparalleled quality.

Today, the Peyronie family proudly carries the torch, with Pascale Peyronie at the helm, continuing the legacy of her forebears. With deep roots in the Pauillac region, the Peyronie family has a rich history in Bordeaux winemaking.

The vineyard is divided into three sections, each contributing its distinctive character to the wine. Situated in the north of Pauillac, close to renowned neighbors like Chateau Mouton Rothschild, Chateau Fonbadet's vineyards benefit from gravel and sand soils, with some vines aged over 50 years.

At Chateau Fonbadet, winemaking is an art form. In 2014, Pascale Peyronie enlisted the renowned Michel Rolland as their consultant, a move that elevated Chateau Fonbadet to new heights.

2019 was an outstanding vintage for Pauillac. It was awarded 97 points by Vinous Media who said it is "Unquestionably a Left Bank vintage. The sweet spot is in Saint-Estèphe and Pauillac, where so many wines are exceptional to profound, at all levels in the hierarchy of terroirs."

Aging: 18 months in French oak barrels.

Tasting Notes: 60% cabernet sauvignon, 20% merlot, 15% cabernet franc and 5% petit verdot and malbec.

Reviews

Aromas of blackcurrant, walnut and dark tobacco follow through to a medium body with well-integrated tannins to pull the whole thing together. Flavorful and complex finish. 60% cabernet sauvignon, 20% merlot, 15% cabernet franc and 5% petit verdot and malbec. A year or two will make it so much better, but I like it now. Try after 2024. ~93 James Suckling

Dark black currants, espresso, smoke, tobacco leaf, cocoa and flower aromatics crowd into the perfume. On the palate the wine has depth, weight and richness, with layers of soft, vibrant, silky, dark, chewy, sweet red berries along with a touch of salt to the tannins and a hint of chocolate in the finish. I do not think you can find a better value in Pauillac today! Drink from 2025-2044. ~93 The Wine Independant

Dark ruby garnet, violet reflections, subtle ocher edge lightening. Delicate nougat, ripe cherries and some herbal spice, a touch of velour, inviting bouquet. Juicy, good complexity and sweetness, well-integrated tannins, freshly structured, mineral finish, fine red berry touch, already drinkable, with potential, clear positive trend. ~93 Falstaff

The nose is racy and offers power in control/elegance as well as some airiness in its grain. There are notes of wild blackberry, fresh wild red berries and a hint of racy minerality combined with hints of lily, pepper and a subtle hint of almost saffron (in its flowery side) and cardamom.  On the palate, this wine expresses notes of crunchy red berries, violet and slightly blackberry combined with hints of lily, racy gravel/minerality, toasted almond as well as fine nuances of blond tobacco, cardamom, pulpy/juicy violet plum and sweet spices. Sweetness, volume and richness. ~91-92 Vertdevin
