About the Wine

Located at around 3 miles from 1st Growth Château Margaux, you'll find an enchanting (not so little) estate called Chateau du Tertre.

The estate is made up of 128 acres that remains unchanged since 1855. During the 19th Century, the Chateau de Tertre wines rose to worldwide fame, especially thanks to the 1855 classification which established the Chateau as a Margaux Grand Cru Classe (5th Growth).

Currently owned by the Dutch businessman, Eric Albada Jelgersma. As its name says, this Château is situated on a “Tertre” or hillock. Château du Tertre has a team of oenologists, agronomists, and workers highly committed to the quality of the wine, from the field to the cellar. Known as “The beautiful Tertre d’Arsac” by 19th-century writers, this Châteaux has a spectacular terroir with one of the most elevated gravel outcrops of the Medoc region. You can visit this beautiful place and immerse yourself in the traditional 16th-century culture. They also have a second wine called Les Hauts du Tertre, a wine made from younger vines but with the same style as the Château du Tertre.

Château du Tertre wines are some of the best value Margaux you'll ever come across. The 2019 vintage from this estate was outstanding and was blessed with a 94-point review from Decanter and James Suckling. This wine is spectacular.

Aging: 12 months in French oak barrels, 30% new and 70% 1-year-old barrels.

Tasting Notes54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot.

Reviews

A serious, rich and dark nose filled with tobacco and black chocolate. Great clarity and punch on the palate though, a real lively kick from start to finish with a deep core on the mid-palate. This has structure and good density, feels more heady and seductive, the fruit with a soft sweetness and floral touch and then a menthol-licorice finish but super clean with such minerality. A great feeling at the end. Elegant and expressive. You could drink now but this has some chewy aspects still so needs a little more time to soften. Lovely. 6% Petit Verdot completes the blend. ~94 Decanter

Beautiful purity of fruit here with currant and berry aromas, as well as fresh roses and other flowers. Citrus peel as well. Full-bodied with creamy and lightly velvety tannins that are long and beautiful. Hints of citrus to the lovely fruit. Textured and polished. A blend of 54% cabernet sauvignon, 27% merlot, 13% cabernet franc and 6% petit verdot. Try after 2024. ~94 James Suckling

The nose is fruity, fresh and offers some power, fine concentration, depth and intensity. There are notes of crunchy wild blackberry, raspberry and more slightly pulpy red berries combined with fine hints of violet, zan, and discrete hints of almost crushed blue berries, camphor, cardamom, pepper and a subtle sapiness. The palate is fruity and offers juiciness, smoothness, nice definition, precision, tension and acidity. A flattering/gourmet quality of the texture. On the palate this wine expresses notes of pulpy/juicy cherry, pulpy/juicy strawberry and more slightly crushed red currant combined with hints of juicy/fresh plum, a touch of blackcurrant, fine hints of racy minerality, star anise, chocolate, toasted almond as well as a subtle hint of toasted hazelnut and a very discreet almost mentholated finish. Powerful finish. ~93-94 Vert de Vin

The Grand Vin 2019 Château Du Tertre checks in as 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot. This beautiful Margaux offers awesome notes of black raspberries, crushed flowers, sandalwood, spice, and a touch of bouquet garni. With medium to full-bodied richness, polished tannins, and a great finish, it's certainly the finest wine I've tasted from this domaine. It's going to evolve nicely over the coming two decades. ~92-94+ Jeb Dunnuck

The 2019 du Tertre is dark, virile and imposing, but in the mid-weight style that is typical of this property., Black cherry, plum, spice, new leather, licorice and dried flowers meld together as the 2019 shows off its depth and resonance. Readers will find a wine with real character and gravitas in the 2019. ~92-94 Vinous

The 2019 du Tertre opens in the glass with aromas of sweet cassis and plums mingled with undergrowth, cedarwood, violets and subtle hints of cigar wrapper. Medium-bodied, bright and integrated, with a nicely concentrated core of fruit, lively acids and fine, powdery tannins that assert themselves on the finish, it delivers a certain generosity of fruit in a fine-boned package. Even if this numbers among the more powerful du Tertre vintages of recent years, it remains a wine defined by elegance more than impact. ~93 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Dark ruby garnet, violet reflections, subtle lightening of the edges. Heart cherry fruit with a delicate herbal underlay, fine berry fruit, nuances of figs. Medium complexity, sweet forest berry confit, round, ripe tannins, pleasant freshness, already appears accessible, subtle sweetness in the aftertaste, medium length. ~92 Falstaff

Offers incense and black tea notes that give this aromatic intrigue, while roasted plum and cherry compote flavors provide the bulk of the experience. Delivers a swath of warm humus on the finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2032. 8,000 cases made. ~90 Wine Spectator
