96 Point Vintage: 2018 Chateau Sainte-Barbe "Men & Gus" Cuvee Bordeaux Superieur
Cuvée, when referring to still wine, usually indicates a blend that a winery is particularly proud of, one that comes from purposefully selected best barrels of high quality from the vintage. France does not regulate the term so some wineries may take liberties when calling a wine a cuvée, but not the winery or the wine we’re excited to tell you about today.
Château Sainte Barbe is a “Monument Historique,” a designation given to national heritage sites in France. With a winemaking history that goes back to 1650, their wines—like the 2018 Chateau Sainte Barbe Men & Gus Cuvée Bordeaux Superieur—have the advantage of coming from a team that intimately understands the property’s potential.

In 2013, the Gaye family, who also own Château Grand Corbin Manuel and Château Haut-Cadet in Saint Emilion Grand Cru, and Château La Creation in Pomerol, took over Château Sainte Barbe. Their demand for excellence shines in the Men & Gus Cuvée. A blend of 85% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot, and 3% Cabernet Franc, it’s from the outstanding vintage that Vinous rated 96 points, stating it was “a very strong vintage that falls just short of being truly epic."
This Bordeaux Superieur is full of intense fruit, toasted notes, dark chocolate, vanilla, and sweet spices on the nose, and structured fruit, ripe tannins, and freshness on the palate.
