Bordeaux is the #1 wine region in the world. Most wine lovers swoon over the big five, greatest names in the world such as Lafite, Mouton, Margaux, Haut Brion and Latour. But, the reason Bordeaux is so important is because it is the global leader in innovation in wine. And, importantly, it is also the top region in the world where you will find the highest quality to price value ratio. Some of the best values are wines that have unmatched pedigree. For example, many of the top classified growths offer second and third wines. So, you get to taste wines from some of the best winemaking teams in the world who are working with vineyards that may be a hop, skip and a jump from hallowed vineyards that sell their wines for hundreds of dollars a bottle. This is where having a friend in the wine business, like the experts at BHW, provides the insider’s knowledge and guidance. Here are some of our favorites right now.

2022 Chateau Petit Gravet Aine Saint Emilion Grand Cru

A small-production wine made mostly from old-vine Cabernet Franc, with a touch of Merlot. Grown organically on just 2.4 hectares, this wine is known for its elegance, freshness, and energy. It offers bright red fruit, floral notes, and a touch of minerality, with a lively, balanced finish. Critics have praised its purity and character, and it’s expected to age beautifully over the next 10–15 years. A great find for fans of structured, Cabernet Franc–driven Bordeaux.
2020 Blason de l'Evangile Pomerol

2020 Blason de l'Evangile Pomerol

When Napa Cab drinkers ask for a Bordeaux wine that’s approachable yet complex, I often recommend Blason de l'Evangile. This Pomerol is lush, fruit-forward, and Merlot-driven, offering a velvety texture and depth that showcases the best of the region. With impressive scores in the 90s, this wine is one of the top values from Pomerol. It’s a wine I reach for again and again, year after year, and it's perfect for anyone looking to dive into the world of Bordeaux with a wine that truly delivers.

2020 Chateau Montrose La Dame de Montrose St. Estephe

Montrose is arguably the best Classified 2nd Growth and their first wine sells for $250+, which makes it a relative bargain compared to the first growths. This is their second wine made by the same winemaking team in the same winery with younger vines. At a ¼ of the price of the first wine, this is a great way to get to know one of the best wineries not only in St. Estephe, but in all of Bordeaux and the world.

2020 Chateau Les Carmes Haut-Brion Pessac-Leognan

This winery is a gem located in the heart of Pessac-Leognan, just a stone's throw from the prestigious Château Haut-Brion ($500+) and Château La Mission Haut-Brion ($600+). As a Bordeaux treasure, this wine offers incredible value for money, combining elegance and power with stunning aging potential. The 2020 vintage is drinking beautifully now, with its silky tannins and layered complexity, making it a joy to experience at any stage. If you’re looking for a standout Bordeaux that won’t break the bank, this is a wine you’ll want to reach for again and again.

2020 Château Lafon-Rochet Saint-Estèphe

Château Lafon-Rochet is one of the standout properties in the Saint-Estèphe appellation, and the 2020 vintage further solidifies its position as a rising star in Bordeaux. With a rich history dating back to the 17th century, the estate has undergone significant modernization in recent years, ensuring its wines rival those of its prestigious neighbors. Known for its exceptional terroir, the 2020 Lafon-Rochet showcases a stunning blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, producing a wine that balances power with finesse. The wine benefits from meticulous vineyard management and a newly renovated cellar, offering an elegant, age-worthy Bordeaux experience. While the price may still seem reasonable compared to other top Bordeaux estates, the production is limited, making it a wine to secure while you can. Watch for this property to continue making waves in the wine world. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to own a bottle from one of the most promising estates in the region.

2022 Chateau Corbin Saint Emilion Grand Cru

A beautifully balanced wine from the prestigious Saint-Émilion region. It offers rich fruit flavors with smooth tannins and a fresh finish, thanks to the estate’s unique terroir. Known for its elegance and value, this wine provides classic Grand Cru quality without the high price tag. A great choice for those seeking an exceptional yet affordable Saint-Émilion.

2014 Chateau Talbot St. Julien

This is a 94pt rated wine from three major critics from a vintage that was overlooked. It’s a classic wine from a very classy winery that always delivers delicious wines. If you want a true St. Julien experience and a wine that’s going to impress now, without having to age it further, buy this.

2022 Chateau Grand Mayne Saint Emilion Grand Cru

A standout value from one of the appellation’s most trusted estates, known for its generous fruit, polished texture, and limestone-driven freshness. The warm 2022 vintage gave Grand Mayne impressive depth and concentration, with ripe dark berries, supple tannins, and a vibrant lift that keeps everything in balance. Long appreciated by insiders but still priced below many of its high-profile neighbors, this is a refined, overachieving Right Bank red that delivers true Grand Cru character without the premium price tag.

2018 Chateau Haut Bailly Pessac Leognan

I really don’t have anything to add that the critics haven’t already gushed about. Everyone considers this a 96-98 point wine with Suckling coming in at 99 points. This wine is at the top of the list as wine of the 2018 vintage. I hesitate to even include this wine in this list, because I really want to keep it for myself.

2020 Cos d'Estournel 'Pagodes de Cos' Saint-Estephe

You can pay $225 for the first wine from this esteemed estate or grab this for only about one-fourth the price. Located near Ch. Lafite Rothschild, Cos (pronounced “co”) is one of the super second growths that many people say outperforms some of the first growths in certain vintages. The original owner traveled to India and brought back Pagoda architecture and elephants statues. Hence, the name.

2022 Chateau La Tour Figeac Saint Emilion Grand Cru

Located in the heart of the renowned Saint-Émilion appellation, Château La Tour Figeac stands out for its elegance and precision. The 2022 vintage beautifully combines the power and finesse typical of the region, with rich dark fruit flavors, delicate floral notes, and a subtle touch of spice. The wine's silky tannins and balanced acidity make it approachable now, while its structure promises excellent aging potential. Aged in oak barrels, this wine offers a harmonious blend of richness and freshness, showcasing the estate's dedication to producing wines of exceptional quality. The 2022 Château La Tour Figeac is a standout Grand Cru that combines the tradition and sophistication of Saint-Émilion with a modern touch.

2020 Chateau Marquis d'Alesme Margaux

2020 Chateau Marquis d'Alesme Margaux

A beautiful example of Margaux elegance from a strong Bordeaux vintage. The 2020 offers ripe blackberry and cherry flavors with hints of violet, spice, and smooth oak. It’s silky, balanced, and refined, with enough structure to age nicely but already very enjoyable with a short decant. A classy, polished red that drinks effortlessly.
