About the Wine

Sori Tildin was acquired by Gaja in 1967 and is named for Angelo's grandmother, Clotilde Rey. Sori means "hilltop" in Piemontese dialect. This wine is considered one of the finest Nebbiolos in the world. Gaia Gaja considers 2014 one of the finest vintages EVER.  2014 was an outstanding vintage (95+ rated by VM). With decanting, this wine is already enjoyable, but the patient collector will enjoy the wine in 2022 and for up to 25 years. If you can find it, this wine regularly trades at over $500 and invariably gains in price as the supply dwindles.

The Gaja family landed in Piemonte from Spain in the 17th century. Following WWII, Giovanni Gaja acquired large vineyard holdings in the area. His son, Angelo, is considered one of the pioneers of modern winemaking in Italy. After studying wine in Montpellier, he was one of the first to bring French techniques such as barrique barrel ageing, malolactic fermentation, and modern technical innovations. Yet, he continued to implement extended macerations following fermentation. By raising the level and recognition of Nebbiolo, Angelo Gaja has been commended by every major wine publication in the world and acknowledged as an innovator. Today, his two daughters Gaia and Rossana manage the extensive land holdings and global distribution of this important brand.

Reviews

Sweet rose petal, mint, chiseled red-toned fruit and chalk give the 2014 Barbaresco Sorì Tildìn its sculpted, brilliant personality. All the elements are in the right place. A wine of translucent energy and weightless elegance, the Sorì Tildìn is hauntingly beautiful today. A host of floral notes and red berry fruit infuse the persistent, chiseled finish in this fabulous Barbaresco. As it so often is, the Barbaresco Sorì Tildìn is a wine of pure charm and seduction. ~97pts, VM

Menthol, pressed rose, woodland berry and crushed herb aromas slowly emerge on this elegant, structured red along with a hint of underbrush. The firm, refined palate delivers Marasca cherry, ground clove and licorice framed in taut, fine-grained tannins. Drink 2022–2034. ~ 95 pts, Cellar Selection WE

The nose has it all here with fresh cranberry character, brambleberries and lavender intermingled with darker, more complex notes of cedar, nutmeg and cinnamon. Full body, so much vibrant acidity, tangy fruit, expansive yet tight tannins and a long, savory finish. Profound minerality. Delicious now but better in 2020. ~ 96pts JS

Gaja's 2014 Barbaresco Sorì San Lorenzo is clearly at the beginning of a long and promising aging trajectory. At it's core, it shows a pinch of nervous energy and inner tightness that will surely unravel and soften as this beautiful wine continues along its magical journey in time. Angelo Gaja and his family present spectacular results in this controversial 2014 vintage. They have risen far above most of their peers and have shown a keen ability to understand their site and the versatility of their cherished Nebbiolo grape. The variety sings with a loud and exuberant voice, first offering plenty of primary fruit like blackberry and dried cherry. It then follows up with savory earth and spice. This is a bright and youthful wine that is set steady for a long aging future. ~ 95pts, WA
