About the Wine
Wine Spectator once said, "If you want to understand what great Italian wine is all about, buy a bottle of Brunello. No wine in Italy matches Tuscany's Brunello di Montalcino when it comes to class and age-ability."
We agree—wholeheartedly. And if you really want to understand what great Italian wine can do, it’s time to taste Colle Nero Tradinoi Brunello di Montalcino. This isn’t just any Brunello; it’s a wine that captures the essence of Montalcino with its deep, rich character and incredible aging potential.
Crafted exclusively for Big Hammer Wines by Terre Nere, a family-owned artisanal winery in the heart of Montalcino, Colle Nero is a labor of love. Named Tra di Noi, which means “between us,” this wine was made for our enjoyment—and now, we’re excited to share it with you.
With a true representation of the Tuscan terroir, Colle Nero is a rare find that reflects the same richness and complexity as some of the region’s finest, but with a price tag that makes it an absolute steal. Don’t miss your chance to taste this exclusive wine—available only through Big Hammer Wines.
Right next to the famous Poggio di Sotto, where bottles can easily set you back $300, Terre Nere grows its grapes on the same world-class land. Colle Nero gives you all the depth and complexity of a top Montalcino Brunello, but without the hefty price tag. This is your chance to taste the best of Montalcino at a fraction of the cost.
Montalcino is one of the most celebrated wine regions in the world, known for producing some of the finest red wines on the planet. Terre Nere’s journey began with Salvatore Vallone, an experienced agriculturalist from Palermo, and his wife Vincenza, who decided to leave behind their life in Palermo to follow their passion for the land in Tuscany. What started with cattle, cheese, and table wine soon blossomed into something much greater.
In 1996, Salvatore’s son Pasquale, despite a successful banking career, purchased 37 acres of land in Montalcino. Little did he know that this family venture would grow into one of the region’s most respected wineries.
The name Terre Nere translates to “Black Land,” named after the distinctive black soil in the vineyard, which owes its richness to the nearby Mount Amiata, an extinct volcano that imparts a unique minerality to the wines. The 24-acre vineyard, primarily planted with Sangiovese (Montalcino’s flagship grape), also features a small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon. Surrounded by virgin forests, the vineyard thrives on soils made of Galestro and clay loam, providing the perfect foundation for wines with incredible depth and elegance.
At Terre Nere, every detail is carefully considered, from the vineyard to the cellar. Under the guidance of winemaker Niccolo, who has been with the estate since 2018, the team includes Francesca and Federico, Pasquale’s children, alongside consultant Giuseppe Gorelli and agronomist Federico Becarelli—all committed to transitioning the estate to sustainable and biodynamic practices. Today, the vineyard and wines are certified organic.
The Colle Nero undergoes a traditional aging process, spending three years in large Slavonian oak barrels and at least six months in the bottle. This careful aging process gives the wine a beautiful, harmonious structure, allowing it to evolve gracefully over time.
2020 was a good vintage in Montalcino. Wine Spectator awarded this year a 93 point review and said it delivers "purity, balance and energy."
Aging: 3 years in large Slavonian oak barrels and at least 6 months in the bottle.
Tasting Notes
100% Sangiovese Grosso. Amazing structure, elegant and fine, it has soft and silky tannins. This powerful Brunello shows the aromas of ripe red fruits with light menthol notes and hints of tobacco. A good acidity. This wine will age for a long time.
