About The Wine

Chateau d'Yquem needs no introduction. As the world's only Premier Cru Supérieur — a distinction held since the 1855 Classification — it is the undisputed benchmark of Sauternes and arguably the most prestigious wine estate on earth. But hidden within the same 100-hectare hilltop vineyard lives a second wine almost no one knows exists.

'Y' — pronounced "Ygrec" — is the estate's rare dry white, first produced in 1959 and made in fewer than 1,000 cases each vintage. The grapes come from the exact same vines that yield the legendary Sauternes, harvested earlier and vinified completely dry, with just a whisper of residual sugar (6 g/l in 2022). Aged on its lees in one-third new French oak barrels for ten months, it is a wine of singular terroir purity — full-bodied, mineral, and built to evolve over 15 years or more.

The 2022 vintage carries additional historical weight: it is Chateau d'Yquem's first certified organic vintage, a milestone for an estate that has stewarded this hilltop for over four centuries.

The same year the estate produced what many critics called one of the greatest Sauternes ever made from its flagship wine, the 'Y' delivered its own distinctive statement — richer and more textured than usual, driven by a higher proportion of Sémillon, and earning 94 points from James Suckling.

A blend of 60% Sauvignon Blanc and 40% Sémillon with 6 g/l residual sugar.

Full-bodied and generous on the nose with sliced apple, pineapple, lychee, and tropical fruit framed by fine phenolic density.

The palate shows a satin texture layered with crunchy pear, allspice, fennel seed, lime leaf, and chalk dust, cut through by a racy, precise backbone. Finishes with a lingering chalky mineral note and impressive length. Drink from 2025 through 2040.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Pale yellow, green hints, silver reflections. On the nose, subtle hints of lime blossom, pear and orange, notes of lime zest, a pleasant herbal savouriness and fine botrytis nuances underlaid with notes of vanilla and blanched almonds. Elegant with white Pome fruit, taut and tightly meshed, nuances of pear, finesse-rich acid structure and subtle notes of salt and white almonds on the long, lasting finish. An elegant and harmonious food wine with definite ageing potential. (10/1/2024, cellar, drink -20). ~ 95 Falstaff

This is a big white with sliced apple, pineapple and lychee fruit. It's full-bodied and dense with lots of fruit and phenolics on the mid-palate. A roundness and power at the end. From the same plots as Yquem. Harvested August 9. 60% sauvignon blanc and 40% semillon. Drink or hold. ~ 94 James Suckling

Fresh, crunchy pears, allspice, fennel seed, and lime leaves, leading to touches of lemon drops, chalk dust, and white pepper. The medium-bodied palate has a satiny texture and racy backbone with layers of pear and baking spices flavors, finishing on a lingering chalky note. Drink: 2025–2040. ~ 94 The Wine Independent

THE PRODUCER

Chateau d’Yquem

Located on a hilltop in Sauternes, roughly fifty kilometers southeast of Bordeaux, Château d’Yquem is a place where history, landscape and discipline converge.

The estate has been shaped over more than four centuries, its vineyards spread across approximately 100 hectares — a rare scale for Sauternes, and a crucial element in Yquem’s ability to craft balance in challenging vintages.

At the heart of Yquem’s identity lies botrytis cinerea, the noble rot that concentrates sugars, acids and aromas. Yet at Yquem, botrytis is never rushed. Harvests unfold through multiple passes, sometimes stretching over weeks, as each parcel and even individual bunches are picked only when they reach the desired balance.

This selective approach explains not only the wine’s consistency, but also why certain vintages are simply not produced if conditions fail to align.
