About The Wine

Nestled in the heart of Bordeaux’s Moulis-en-Médoc, this estate traces its roots back to the 16th century, with a tale of ownership, reinvention, and transformation that could rival the most exciting adventures in wine history. From the hands of Gaston De L'Isle, who also founded Chateau Latour, to the cuvée-mastering Cuvelier family, who took over in 2008 (same owners as Clos Fourtet in Saint Emilion Grand Cru, an emblematic estate that’s producing $150+ wines), this estate has undergone a revival. And that revival? It’s now something you can savor in every bottle.

Since the Cuvelier family stepped in, they’ve modernized the winemaking facility, focused on reducing yields, and fine-tuned their approach to organic and sustainable viticulture. They’re even exploring biodynamics, taking the next step toward truly innovative farming. This is a Bordeaux for today, and it’s one that will only get better with age.

The vineyard itself is a stunning 68 hectares of carefully managed land, with a dominant blend of 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot, 9% Petit Verdot, and a touch of Cabernet Franc. The vines, averaging 35 years old, benefit from the plateau’s gravelly hillsides – perfect for a wine that is equal parts elegance and power. The soils here, with their perfect balance of warmth and freshness, give the wine structure and depth, while the careful hand of winemaker Stéphane Derenoncourt guides the process every step of the way.

What makes Chateau Poujeaux stand out, aside from its rich history and amazing terroir, is its incredible value. This wine punches above its weight, offering the essence of Bordeaux's Left Bank at a fraction of the price. In fact, it’s widely considered one of the best values from Bordeaux today. Whether you’re sipping it now or storing it for a few years, this wine is one that always delivers.

2022 was an extraordinary vintage for Bordeaux, it was blessed with a 95 pt review by Wine Spectator who said: "A new paradigm for Bordeaux. Very aromatic and sleek, fresh and pure in feel, with all major varietals performing well; far more consistent than the 2018-2020 trio."

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

This is really structured and tannic, but the phenolics are very polished and creamy. You smell blackcurrants and minerals with fresh herbs, such as thyme and bay leaf. It's medium-bodied with firm, polished tannins and a long, intense finish. This will age beautifully. Excellent value for a cellar-worthy wine. 55% cabernet sauvignon, 42% merlot and 3% petit verdot. Wait until 2030 for this to soften. ~94 James Suckling

Deep ruby-hued, the 2022 Chateau Poujeaux is based on 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot. It offers a wonderful perfume of ripe black cherries and hints of cassis as well as sappy spring flowers and subtle tobacco. Medium to full-bodied, with ultra-fine tannins and no hard edges, this might be one of the greatest Poujeaux made. I would drink bottles over the coming two decades, but it will last even longer. ~94 Jeb Dunnuck

Deep ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, subtle brightening on the rim. Ripe cassis, black cherries, Cabernet bouquet, fine herbal savouriness in the underlay. Good complexity, dark berries, nougat, firm, supporting tannins, toasty aromas on the finish, has length and certain ageing potential. ~93 Falstaff

Has an old school heart to it, as is so often the case with Poujeaux, then opens deftly to show richly textured brambled blackberry and loganberry fruits, waves of cocoa-dusted almonds and liquorice root, acidity pretty high on the finish. ~93 Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux

Licorice, flowers, tobacco leaf, cedar and blackberries, and spearmint form the nose. The medium-bodied palate is loaded with currants, blackberries, wet earth, and savory herbs, with a hint of olives on the fresh, chewy backend. The wine blends 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot, 14% ABV, 3.85 pH. Drink from 2025-2042. ~93 The Wine Cellar Insider
