About The Wine

Founded in 1868, Domaine Jacques Prieur stands among Burgundy’s most historically significant estates, distinguished by an exceptionally rare holding of Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards spanning both the Côte de Beaune and the Côte de Nuits. Few domaines can claim ownership in so many of Burgundy’s most revered sites, and fewer still farm them with such precision and restraint.

Today, the estate is stewarded by the Labruyère family, with winemaking led by Nadine Gublin, one of Burgundy’s most respected enologists. Her approach is unwaveringly site-driven, combining traditional Burgundian practices with modern precision to allow each vineyard to speak clearly and without excess. Under her direction, Jacques Prieur has firmly established itself among the elite producers of contemporary Burgundy while remaining deeply rooted in its historic foundations.

That philosophy reaches its highest expression in Musigny Grand Cru, widely regarded as one of the greatest terroirs in the Côte de Nuits, and often spoken of as the most refined and complete Grand Cru of Chambolle-Musigny. The vineyard sits on a geological fault overlooking Clos Vougeot and bordering the Combe d’Orveau, benefiting from a rare south-east exposure and a naturally warm, sheltered microclimate. The soils are thin and stony, offering excellent drainage while storing heat during the day and releasing it slowly at night, ensuring consistently ripe, balanced fruit even in cooler vintages.

As Vinous notes, the 2022 vintage is Burgundy’s latest trick — a treasure trove of bright, fresh wines in a season that seemed destined to deliver the opposite.

2022 Domaine Jacques Prieur Musigny Grand Cru opens with a deep ruby core edged by an intense purple rim. Aromatically, it unfolds slowly, beginning with spicy vanilla notes before evolving into lifted floral tones of violet, joined by hints of menthol and freshness. On the palate, the wine is juicy and precise, driven by ripe black cherry fruit, framed by dense, spicy tannins that bring both structure and energy. Despite its concentration, the wine remains remarkably poised, finishing long and resonant with the unmistakable signature of Musigny Grand Cru Pinot Noir.

In the cellar, every decision is made to preserve purity and texture. The grapes are hand-harvested into small crates, carefully sorted, and fully destemmed before undergoing an 18-day maceration in temperature-controlled open oak vats. Pigeage is performed twice daily during fermentation to build structure without hardness. Following 100% malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged entirely in oak barrels for 21 months, allowing depth and complexity to develop while maintaining clarity and balance.

This is age-worthy Grand Cru Burgundy at its most complete, combining power, finesse, and longevity. A wine shaped by one of Burgundy’s greatest sites, guided by one of its most precise hands, and built to evolve gracefully over decades.
