About the Wine
Founded in 2007, El Enemigo Winery is a project between two of the strongest names in the Argentinian wine industry, Alejandro Vigil and Adrianna Catena.
Alejandro Vigil is the mastermind behind El Enemigo’s wines and some of the best wines in all of Argentina for that matter. In fact, he produced and Adrianna produced the first winery to obtain a 100-point score from Robert Parker.
Alejandro Vigil is a master of Chardonnay. He's a man who likes to push boundaries, which is why this impressive white was made with a little flor, just like a Fino Sherry. Asian pear, sliced green apple, fresh quince, toasty almond, honey nectar, and vanilla bean sing across the palate in perfect harmony. This briny and textured pearl will have you tapping your feet to the rhythm of the Chardonnay master's drum.
Nestled within Mendoza lies a treasure known to insiders as Gualtallary, a high-altitude terroir James Suckling hails as “Mendoza’s Montrachet.” Perched among the soaring Andes, this remarkable region has, since 2005, earned its place among the world’s elite wine capitals—alongside Bordeaux and Rioja. Every grape in this Chardonnay hails exclusively from Gualtallary, capturing the essence of its rarefied soil and breathtaking altitude.
Aging: 12 months in Oak Barrels
Tasting Notes
100% Chardonnay. 2022 El Enemigo Chardonnay bursts with crisp Asian pear, green apple, and quince. Toasty almond and vanilla add depth, while a briny, lively texture and bright acidity keep it fresh. A crisp, saline finish makes it impossible to resist.
Critical Reviews
A consistently impressive chardonnay that highlights purity and saline minerality. Salted lemons, sliced apples, seashells and stones drizzled with a touch of oak spice. Full-bodied yet tense and lightly saline on the palate, with bright acidity and a pure, lengthy finish. Nervy and simply delicious. Drink or hold. ~96 James Suckling
Gualtallary area, vines over 20 years old planted on limestone-rich soils at an altitude of around 1,400 meters, north of the Uco Valley. Aged in 500-liter barrels for a year, with 35% new oak, this wine speaks clearly of the excellent 2022 vintage in Uco. The juicy clarity of the fruit combines with saline notes. The body is intense and oily, with a sensation of ripe white fruit projecting to the end of the palate. A Chardonnay that drinks very well now, but will gain in complexity with a few years in the bottle. This wine is aged 100% under the flor de flor (a veil of yeast). ~94 Descorchados Magazine
The 2022 Chardonnay hails from Gualtallary in the Uco Valley. Aged for 12 months in oak barrels, with some under velo de flor, this bright green-gold wine reveals aromas of peaches and pears with a hint of cashew and a slightly oaky backdrop. Dry and lean, the palate lingers with a chalky mouthfeel. This is a modern high-altitude Chardonnay ~94 Vinous Media
Alejandro Vigil allows a little flor to develop on the surface of his complex Gualtallary Chardonnay, giving it a salty undertone. Flavours of oatmeal, orange peel and waxed lemons are complemented by some oak spice and sweetness and a drizzle of dried honey. ~93 Tim Atkin, Master of Wine
