About the Wine
This is Pecorino like you’ve never tasted before.
Born on the sun-drenched hill of Poggio Salaia, this white bursts with energy from its roots—literally. The vineyard sits on ancient soils rich in sand, limestone, and sandstone, the secret behind this wine’s mouthwatering minerality and aging potential.
Torre Zambra was among the first to champion the comeback of the Pecorino grape in Abruzzo. Today, their ‘Poggio Salaia’ bottling is a benchmark of the style—bold, floral, citrusy, and seriously satisfying.
It pours a gleaming straw yellow, and opens with notes of white flowers, citrus zest, and pineapple, with a subtle whiff of fresh-cut grass. The palate delivers a vibrant mix of lychee and lemon, anchored by bright acidity and a mineral spine that lingers long after the last sip.
Founded in 1910, Torre Zambra is one of the oldest wineries in Abruzzo. It all began with Vincenzo Cerchio, who bought a slice of majestic land crowned by a tower (hence the name). He planted Montepulciano and Trebbiano, dreaming big—but WWII devastated the vineyards.
The Cerchio family didn’t flinch. They replanted. And in 1961, their first official label was born.
Fast-forward to today: Federico De Cerchio, the fourth generation, is at the helm. He blends tradition with innovation, farming organically and letting nature lead the way. Spontaneous fermentation—using only native yeasts—adds real soul to every bottle.
Aging: on fine lees, in steel vats for 2 months and in bottle for 2 months.
Tasting Notes
100% Pecorino.
Critical Reviews
The nose feels ethereal yet textured, as a raw almond blade cuts through aromas of dried pear, white peach and sweet pink grapefruit. The palate brings more citrus and stone fruit, but not without sophisticated bitterness, to create a wine that is both energetic and substantial. It's a screaming value and an ideal introduction to Pecorino. ~93 Wine Enthusiast (v.2023)
