About The Wine

Krug Grande Cuvée is born from Joseph Krug’s dream to craft the very best Champagne every single year, regardless of the climate’s natural variations. He founded the House in Reims in 1843 as a visionary non-conformist with an uncompromising philosophy: honor the character of each vineyard, respect the individuality of every plot and its wine, and build a vast library of reserve wines to ensure excellence beyond the limits of a single harvest.

Today, Maison Krug fulfills that vision annually with a new Edition of Krug Grande Cuvée—the House’s most generous and complete expression of Champagne. Each edition reflects a specific creation in this ongoing legacy, symbolized by its unique number, which marks another year in the founder’s re-imagined dream.

Transcending the notion of vintage, Krug Grande Cuvée is traditionally composed of more than 120 individual wines from over 10 years, creating a depth and fullness impossible to achieve from a single year alone. It is Champagne in its most orchestral form—a symphony of flavors and aromas in perfect harmony.

This bottle is the result of 24 years of work. Composed around the harvest of 2017, the 173ème Édition is a blend of 150 wines from 13 different years — the youngest from 2017, the oldest dating back to 2001 — with reserve wines making up 31% of the final blend. Krug Champagne 2017 was, by any measure, a brutal year in Champagne — 20% of the crop was lost to rot and fungal disease — but Krug's vast library of reserve wines allowed Chef de Cave Julie Cavil to compensate, drawing on Pinot Noirs from Verzy and Verzenay for structure and Chardonnays from 2008 and 2014 for finesse. The result is a wine that transcends its difficult base vintage entirely.

The 173ème Édition earned 97 points from both James Suckling and La Revue du Vin de France, and 96 from Wine Spectator. Critics across the board praise its richness and precision in equal measure — a hallmark of what Krug calls "the most generous expression of Champagne." If you've been waiting for a reason to open something truly extraordinary, this is it.

Intense yellow gold in color. The nose is expressive, fragrant and powerful, with aromas of toast and brioche, stone fruit, verbena, vanilla pastry cream, French toast, and baba au rhum.

On the palate, the wine is unctuous, creamy and generous, with nuances of juicy fruits, peach in syrup and ripe citrus giving way to toasted notes and pine nut. A generous and precise mouthfeel with a crisp, mouthwatering lemon finish

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Extremely complex, showing dried apples, light caramel, brioche and flint with cedar, nuts and hints of gunmetal. Integrated, caressing bubbles. Medium-bodied with a laser-guided, compacted and extremely long palate that focuses the character and the flavors. So deep and polished. Tangy at the end. Drink or hold. ~ 97 James Suckling

Bright golden yellow colour. Intense flavours of ripe yellow stone fruit, pineapple confit, crème brûlée and almond paste, complemented by fresh brioche and lemon curd. Full-bodied on the palate with a very fine acidity. Chalky-salty notes and fine tannins lend structure. Youthful, savoury freshness and lemon confit merge into opulent, woody-spicy elegance. Long-lasting pleasure. ~ 97 Falstaff

The 173rd Edition is marked by the delicate texture inherent in 2017, its base vintage, which is slender. This balanced and caressing wine seems to us to be more open at this stage than the 172 Edition, which has additional depth and tension and needs more time. ~97 La Revue du Vin de France

Vibrant and rich, statuesque yet graceful, this lovely Champagne offers an expansive range of patisserie apple and pear fruit, grilled macadamia nut, lime and tangerine peel notes, with fragrant saffron, clove, espresso and mineral accents. A lithe, focused spine of lemony acidity and an underlying streak of salinity are enmeshed in the flavor profile, and the fine, satinlike mousse carries everything on the long, mouthwatering finish. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Meunier. Disgorged winter 2023–2024 (Krug ID 124003). Drink now through 2040. ~ 96 Wine Spectator

This brut white sparkling wine is made using the traditional method from a blend of 150 wines from 13 different vintages, the oldest being 2001 and the most recent (and base vintage, representing 69% of the total) 2017. The final blend is composed of 44% Pinot Noir, 34% Chardonnay, and 22% Pinot Meunier. A more ample version, with excellent volume on the palate, but also vibrant acidity, a creamy texture, and very fine bubbles that support its white and stone fruit notes, giving fluidity and depth to the whole. Precise, refined, and layered, it has a long finish with saline, citrus, peach, pear, floral, bakery, dried fruit, and yeast notes. ~ 95 Revista Adega

Based on 2017, Krug's NV Grande Cuvée 173ème Édition is superb. It is an especially rich, almost opulent Grande Cuvée that very much reflects the personality of the base year in its tropical flavor profile. Lemon confit, baked apple tart, passion fruit, tangerine oil and spice are all beautifully amplified. The Krug team did an exceptional job here. Drink 2025–2045. ~ 95 Vinous Media

THE PRODUCER

Krug

Krug Champagne was born from Joseph Krug’s radical 1843 vision: to create the finest Champagne every single year, regardless of vintage. Refusing to be defined by the whims of weather, he began meticulously collecting reserve wines—each a distinct voice in a larger symphony—so he could craft a cuvée of unwavering excellence.

Today, the House remains true to that founding promise, guided by the sixth generation of the Krug family. Every bottle is built like a masterpiece: long-aged, precision-driven, and composed from an extraordinary library of wines spanning multiple years. Krug is not just Champagne—it’s a philosophy of patience, depth, and craftsmanship, where each sip reveals layers of complexity and the unmistakable signature of a house that values individuality, harmony, and time above all else.
