About the Wine
The Rochioli family story began over a century ago when Joe Rocchioli Sr., along with his parents Michele and Menichina Rocchioli, embarked on a journey from Italy to Northern California. Their dreams took root in the Russian River Valley, where young Joe Sr. started working at the Wohler Ranch at a mere 10 years old. From those humble beginnings emerged a passion for the land that would shape the family's destiny.
Fast forward to 1934, when Joe Sr.'s son, Joe Rochioli Jr., was born. The family moved to Fenton Acres, the very grounds where Rochioli Vineyards stands today. Through dedication and hard work, they transformed the landscape, gradually transitioning from a diverse array of crops to focusing on the art of winemaking.
Joe Sr.'s determination led to the acquisition of the Fenton Acres property by the mid-1950s. While the beginnings included traditional "jug wine" grapes, it was the foresight of Joe Jr. that truly transformed Rochioli Vineyards. In 1959, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc found their place in the soil, and though Cabernet later gave way, the Sauvignon Blanc vines from that time still thrive, among the oldest in California.
The true turning point came in 1968, when Joe Jr. introduced Pinot Noir to the vineyards. A bold move, this decision showcased the family's pioneering spirit, as Pinot Noir was relatively unknown in the region at the time. With meticulous care and a dedication to the terroir, this grape flourished, followed by the introduction of Chardonnay shortly after.
The 1980s brought a new chapter to the Rochioli legacy. A name change from Fenton Acres to Rochioli Vineyards marked the family's confident step towards producing wines that carry their own name. The 1985 Rochioli Pinot Noir emerged as a revelation, claiming the title of 'The Best Pinot Noir in America' by Wine Spectator in 1987. This recognition was not only a validation of their efforts but a promise of remarkable things to come.
Tom Rochioli, now a third-generation winemaker, continues the family tradition with the 2013 Rochioli Estate Grown Pinot Noir. Inspired by his visits to Burgundy, Tom's approach centers around capturing the unique essence of each vineyard block. By allowing the individuality of the grapes to shine through minimal intervention, the resulting wines are a testament to the power of terroir.

Reviews
Firmly tannic, with a gravelly edge to the ripe cherry, raspberry, red plum and anise flavors. Needs a little time, as the structure is very tight and the finish persistent. 3,600 cases made.~91 Wine Spectator
