About The Wine

"Taittinger is one of Champagne’s most consistent large brands. The flagship Comtes de Champagne and Comtes de Champagne Rose, two of the finest wines in the region, sometimes fly under the radar, but they are both super-pedigreed wines with brilliant track records for developing considerable complexity in bottle." ~Wine Advocate

The story of Taittinger begins not with wine, but with a wartime promise. In 1915, a young French cavalry officer named Pierre Taittinger was stationed at the Chateau de la Marquetterie near Épernay during World War I. Captivated by the estate, he vowed that if he survived the war, he would one day own it. By 1930 he had acquired it — along with one of Champagne's oldest operating houses, originally founded in 1734. He also purchased a second residence in downtown Reims, which would lend its name to his greatest wine: the Comtes de Champagne.

Today, Taittinger is one of the last major Champagne houses still owned and operated by the family that bears its name, now in the hands of Vitalie and Clovis Taittinger — great-grandchildren of the founder. Their 712 acres of vineyards make it one of the three most extensive estates in all of Champagne, with a deliberate emphasis on Chardonnay that defines the house's signature elegance. Where the average Champagne house plants roughly 27% Chardonnay, Taittinger's vineyards run to 37%.

The Comtes de Champagne is where all of that philosophy culminates. Produced only in the greatest vintages — just 36 times since 1952 — it is built entirely from 100% Grand Cru Chardonnay sourced from the five most prestigious villages of the Côte des Blancs: Avize, Cramant, Chouilly, Oger, and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. Only the delicate first-press juice is used. After blending, the wine descends into the chalk cellars beneath Reims — ancient quarries dating to the 4th century that later became the property of the Abbey of Saint-Nicaise, now 17 meters underground — where it rests on the lees for a full decade before release. The 2014 was disgorged in July 2024.

If you love the depth and richness of a great white Burgundy — a Puligny-Montrachet or Meursault at its peak — this is what that experience becomes when aged underground in the oldest chalk caves in Champagne, with bubbles. Antonio Galloni at Vinous called it a "mini-2008," one of the greatest Champagne vintages of the modern era. Drink it now through 2044, and understand why Vitalie Taittinger calls the Comtes de Champagne "a poem."

100% Grand Cru Chardonnay.

2014 Comtes opens with an expressive, broad nose of apricots, hazelnuts, lemons, white flowers, sliced almonds, and a whisper of licorice.

On the palate it is creamy and layered, with soft, rounded bubbles that spread gracefully across the palate — the mousse fine, persistent, and pillowy. A streak of cool-vintage acidity cuts through rich yellow stone fruit and lemon curd, framed by brioche, pastry dough, and a touch of reductive smoke.

The finish is long, chalky, and pure — classic Comtes, focused and linear, with tension and energy that promise decades of continued development.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Apricots, hazelnuts, lemons, white flowers, sliced almonds and hints of licorice on the nose. It's creamy and layered, with soft, rounded bubbles that spread across the palate. Lovely balance of breadth, ripeness and freshness, with delicious wildflower honey and nut notes lingering. 100% grand cru chardonnay from Avize, Mesnil-sur-Oger, Oger, Cramant and Chouilly. Drink or hold. ~ 97 James Suckling

Closed in style and character like the 2013, Taittinger's 2014 Brut Blanc de Blancs Comtes de Champagne reveals aromas of ripe orchard fruit, confit citrus, dried flowers, herbs, spring blossoms and mirabelle mingled with customary autolytic notes. Full-bodied, seamless and enrobing, it has a delicate, elegant, fleshy core of fruit and racy acids, all enhanced by a saline, fresh and penetrating finish marked by finesse and elegance. This refined, chalky-inflected Comtes de Champagne has the potential to age gracefully over the next 30-40 years. ~ 97 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2014 Comtes de Champagne is pristine. In this tasting, it comes across as a mini-2008, similar in its linear personality, with just a touch more mid-palate creaminess. Readers will find a Comtes that plays in the realm of tension and energy. Citrus confit, white flowers, chalk, mint and chamomile are all finely sketched. Light tropical overtones grace the finish. What an absolute delight. The 2014 can be enjoyed now or cellared. Dosage is 9 grams per liter. Drink between 2026-2044. ~ 97 Vinous Media

Taittinger's Comtes de Champagne shines in 2014. It's a vintage that offered crisp yet open and beautifully defined wines from the grand cru Chardonnays of the Côte des Blancs. This is still primary and youthful, its zesty roasted grapefruit, sweet clementine and pineapple flavours meet juicy white peach and gentle ageing flavours of demerara sugar and toasted brioche. It's a little less intense and dynamic than 2013 but equally fine in its restrained, racy energy. With even a short time on cork the classic toasty Comtes richness will start to emerge. ~ 96 Decanter

A textbook blanc de blancs Champagne, with a rich waft of toasted hazelnut on the nose, plus a voluptuous range of poached apricot, quince paste, tangerine peel and brioche notes that expand on the finely detailed mousse. Focused by well-cut acidity, this is long and mouthwatering, with fragrant spice, mineral and floral accents on the finish. Drink now through 2040. 1,500 cases imported. ~ 96 Wine Spectator

THE PRODUCER

Champagne Taittinger

Champagne Taittinger is one of the oldest and most respected Champagne houses, with origins dating back to 1734 in Reims, though it took its current name after Pierre Taittinger acquired the estate in the early 1930s.

Family-owned for much of its history, the house is known for its elegant, Chardonnay-driven style, extended aging practices, and deep connection to its historic chalk cellars. Today, under the leadership of Vitalie Taittinger, it continues to balance tradition and innovation, producing refined Champagnes that emphasize finesse, freshness, and precision.
